Reader Schoepp says the lease for Via Vai restaurant at 1483 East Valley Road in Montecito is not being renewed. This is a surprise since the place has always been hopping every time I have dined there and what landlord would kick out a popular tenant? The restaurant opened 30 years ago and should remain in business through at least the spring.

This is a travesty. Will they reopen elsewhere?
If that is the whole story, that really stinks. A legendary place that will be missed!
Oh crud. Another family favorite closes. Always busy.
I’ll guess some LA “concept” offered more pesos.
We’ve been loyal frequenters of Via Via since 2005 and this, to us at least, represents a real loss to the (greater Santa Barbara) community. It’s getting so incredibly old watching local favorites disappear as shortsighted landlords refuse to renew leases on popular local favorites instead grabbing for the possibility of bigger lease numbers for trendy but short lived replacements or even worse, would rather their properties sit vacant until they find someone to pay their new ridiculous rents. These type of poor landlord decisions are the reason SB State Street is a shell of what it once was. So sad. I for one, will to choose to vote with my wallet will not be supporting whatever comes next.
