Serving Santa Barbara since 1995, the Press Room at 15 East Ortega Street will be forced to close after losing final appeal to City Council despite the building being over one hundred thirty years old, reader Alhambra Kathy tells me. “I know for a fact (my son worked there for more than a decade) the owner was unable to make any physical changes such as another exterior door because the building was deemed historic,” she added.

No dive bar should ever be allowed to close
I bet the owner and patrons will take offense to a dive bar label.
I think a move would be very successful due to its niche.
Not many small businesses have 30 year run on the same location.
Dive bar label is a bad thing?
If you don’t view your bar as a dive.
The Press Room didn’t file the appeal and aren’t “forced to close” – the owners have an agreement with the developers that includes funding for relocation. Regardless, it’s sad that this SB institution will be demolished so that they can build more market-rate units that will not respond to our City’s urgent need for affordable housing.
“market-rate units”? Not anymore, it’s going to be ANOTHER hotel…
