inedible food insulting service no matter what you call it
Reviewer: Matt from Santa Barbara, CA
This restaurant is listed multiple times under multiple names as state street cafe and/or china bowl likely as an attempt to dodge bad reviews and here comes another....... ordered dinner for 4 at 530, after 2 hours and 3 phone calls food arrived, paid $70 and still tipped the driver, called to speak to the manager when the food obviously had been in the back of a car for 45 minutes, he offered to give me a break next time, upon serving the food we find out the hard way the food prep had been terrible to begin with so the time in the car actually softened it up a bit, called to let them know I was coming down to return the food and was told I would get 50% back, when I protested the guy told me to watch myself or he would give me nothing. food went in the trash uneaten, food was literally inedible.

Standard American Fare

Kind of like Diner food. The food was good American Diner type. This place I think is more for catering/delivery, no parking except minimal street, outdoor seating only. People were nice(did not talk to owner), food took awhile to come out. Been around a long time, was originally on State St. hence the name. Same place as China Bowl in the guide.

GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FRIENDLY FAMILY BUSINESS

I HAVE EATEN HERE MANY TIMES. AND HAVE ORDERED FOOD FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE MENU. I GOT TO MEET JR. WHO IS THE OWNERS SON AND IS VERY KIND. I THINK THEY HAVE GOOD FOOD FOR THE PRICE AND THEY ALSO CATER . THEYVE BEEN AROUND SINCE THE 80'S!!! ALOT OF PEOPLE ON HERE CONTINUE TO ORDER EVEN THOUGH THEY SUPPOSEBLY GET BAD SERVICE. ITS JUST THAT THEY LIKE THE FOOD BUT HAD ONE BAD EXPERIENCE. I CAME TO REALIZE THAT YOU CANT EXPECT THEM TO GIVE YOU ALL THERE ATTENTION OR PATIENCE WHEN THEY DEAL WITH HUNDREDS OF ORDERS A DAY! GREAT FOOD AND DELIVERY SERVICE I WILL DEFFINATLEY ORDER FROM HERE AGAIN. =]

will never eat here again

I already wrote a review for State St Cafe, but it never got posted. Not sure why. I had a similar experience to Daniel's. We ordered from State St Cafe on at least a weekly basis. The food is pretty good for the price. The story is entirely too long to go into much detail. Basically, we ordered delivery one night and were told it would take about 40 minutes. At about the hour an 15 minute mark, I called to cancel the order. I was told the delivery driver had just left. I kindly explained that we were told the order would take 40 minutes and it had been almost twice as long and to be honest, I would rather just cancel the order. The guy immediately lost his mind on the phone. He screamed an endless tirade of obscenities at me and hung up on me. I promptly called back and asked for a manager. I explained the story to the manager and how I was treated by his employee. He at first seemed apologetic, but when I explained that I still intended to cancel my order, he swore at me and said they were charging me anyway. The food arrived about 20 minutes later. I told the delivery guy I was sorry, but we weren't accepting the food. He didn't seem surprised (not sure if this happens often). He was the only nice person I spoke to that night. Im disappointed as I did like the food at State Street Cafe, but I won't be giving them any of my business again.

Well, I was desperate!!

Reviewer: mono from santa barbara
We ordered from here for the first time because we wanted to have something different and a place that delivers....the person taking our order was friendly, but over an hour later the food had still not arrived. Since some of the food was fried and it still hadnt arrived 1:20 minutes later...we decided to call and cancel....who wants cold food....well they begged us to keep the order, said that the driver just left and assured us that the food would be warm, they took $7 off the order. however the food was cold and not very good. Not worth trying

more than you expect

Disregard the complaining yohoo, these guys have always been very pleasant, and the food is good. Big secret, be sober when you order and you will not be dissapointed. two places, one location, good service

I think they are great!!!
Reviewer: liasion4 from santa barbara, ca
My kids are all grown and its easier to order in, I order from just about any place that has fast service and good food. I read the first Negitive comment posted and I just want to say that I have been put on hold, but that is because they are busy! If there are issues with a credit cards, I keep checks & cash on hand for back up. They are not some High falution Place of Corporate structure. So Chill if they dont jump threw your hoop, there are loads of great places to order from in this area. bon apetite.

Worst customer service experience of my life.
Reviewer: Daniel Palmquist from Santa Barbara/California
I had ordered from this place for about 3 or 4 weeks in a row. Every time the person taking my order was rude, always cutting me off, however I like the mixture of food they have so I tried it again. I needed to place two seperate orders for different people at the same address here at work (two different cards) the person said that his computer would not let him do this. He ended up hanging up on my while I was on hold. I called back, and got to the order placing part of the call. I had a simple question about what type of noodles are in their different chinese noodle dishes. As soon as I said the word noodle I was cut off. I explained that I had a question, and the person said, you know what, let me put you on hold. He then hung up on me. I called back, asked for the manager. He was nice, Carlos Torrez, he said sorry for his employees, said they were under a lot of pressure. The food came, we tipped 20%, and in the Lasagna there was NO cheese. None. I called back, asked to speak to the manager, got Carlos back on the phone. I explained to him that there was no cheese, and he said "thats impossble they come pre-made" (great!). I told him he could come look at it, there was no cheese. He then started shouting at the other people working, with me on the phone, and told me that someone else had requested no cheese. He said they come pre-made but we add cheese. I then asked for him to please bring us a new lasagna, with cheese. He said OK we will bring the cheese over right now. I said, no, if you do that the food will be cold - come on now, bring the cheese? I explained to him that he is either going to bring us a new lasgna, or a credit for the one without cheese. If not, I would simply reject the charge on the card. (I hadn't even gotten to the part about the noodle dish they brought-without any noodles) Carlos Torrez then literaly shouted "you know what, F**k you!" and then hung up the phone. I could not believe this! There was no shouting or even a hint of argument between us at this point in the conversation, but obviously State St Cafe/China bowl does not care about customer service, or customers in general. I shall never go there again, and almost guarantee if you call in an order you will not have anywhere near a decent experience.

Two restaurants in one location

FYI, the State Street Cafe and China Bowl share the same location. The State Street Cafe is not on State Street. It is on Ortega Street, about 5 blocks east of State Street.
