Totally Discusting. Filthy place, worse service, 1/7/2018
Reviewer: Terry from Santa Barbara, CA
Place is filthy. It looks like it belongs to another era. Theres ancient egg and syrup slug sticking to the reecking carpet Fount what looked like a rat tail in my omelette Talked to a supposed manager that stared at me in catharsys, never mind an apology. Don’t go to Max’s I get nauseous just thinking about it. Inspection should shut that place down. Change the whole crew and clean up your act

Delicious breakfast at Max's today after far too long, 5/21/2017
Reviewer: Laurie from Santa Barbara, CA
Three of us had breakfast here today and were so pleasantly surprised by how good everything was. It was pretty busy when we arrive for an 11:00 reservation, but surprisingly not noisy at all. The special crab cake benedict was delicious, although the cakes were thin for my taste but clearly home made. Both of the omelettes were huge and incredibly fluffy - I highly recommend the chile verde omelet with cheddar added. We had some minor special requests that they did not bat an eye at, which seems to be rare these days. Nice friendly service to boot, and they have their own (albeit small) parking lot off State Street.

Great experience at Max's
Reviewer: Betty from Santa Barbara, CA
Last night my husband and I had dinner at Max's. The food and service were outstanding. I think it is some of the best Italian food in town. The owner was very friendly and welcoming. We liked the quiet atmosphere and nice music. Be sure to have the chocolate cake for dessert. It is to die for.

Nice neighborhood spot
Reviewer: Karen from Santa Barbara, CA
My husband and I enjoyed a nice dinner here. The bread, salad and entrees were all tasty and well prepared. Margarita, our server was friendly and accomodating. The decor is simple, but cozy...nice little neighborhood eatery (and not just for breakfast).

Horrible...shocked that it has gotten such good ratings
Reviewer: Alex from Santa Barbara, CA
This is a sorry excuse for an Italian restaurant. I ordered calamari, and was completely displeased with the meager portion and soggy quality. I had an arugula salad with beets, which turned out do be small scoop of arugula that was wilted and a sliver of beets. This place is a joke and VERY overpriced.

I love Max's...

I'm writing this before my visit, as I love this restaurant. I come to Santa Barbara on the train once a year. Creature of habit here. I love the suffle omelettes they serve. The service has always been great!! See you the first week of January 2015.

Undiscovered Gem!
Reviewer: Joe from Goleta
We had dinner last night at Max's and, as usual, the food was excellent. Had their steak and it was superb! This was followed with their pecan pie and it was very very good too. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Max's is always a great place for dinner! They have a great breakfast too.

Great service
Reviewer: Nancy from Santa Barbara, CA
It's a great brunch spot, with great egg dishes. The service is friendly and attentive, the food well-prepared and delicious. This is why the place is busy all week... it's a hidden neighborhood jewel.

Highly Recommend!
Reviewer: Barbara from Santa Barbara, CA
My husband and i returned to Max's after an absence of many, many years. We were very impressed with both the food and service. I had the Ricotta and Spinach Ravioli with the browned butter and sage. Delicious! More so than Ca Dario! I also had a cup of their soup of the day: So Good!! My husband had the Vegetable Lasagne and the Spinach Salad. Actually, he requested half of the salad listed on the menu; they accommodated him. Perfect! The environment is quiet and pleasant: you can carry on a conversation with your dinner partner without shouting. We've rediscovered a neighborhood jewel and will definitely be returning there!

Fabulous brunch
Reviewer: Charlotte from Goleta
Had the second best Eggs Benedict in town today, (Crocodile takes first). Nice potatoes, onions and peppers. Very nice staff as well. Only negative, is the place is super shabby, really needs a remodel.

Dinner was excellent
Reviewer: Sue from Goleta,
My husband and I have been here for wine dinners but never just to have a meal so this Friday when we were looking we decided to try it. The Salmon appetizer was excellent followed with the special fish main course. Their wine selection was also very good. We had a wonderful meal with great service, we shall return soon for an excellent meal. It is a little away from downtown Santa Barbara but I recommend the extra drive for a great meal with good service. We enjoyed our Friday evening meal and would recommend it to others.

Excellent Dinner

Normally i come here for lunch but tried dinner! It was excellent! I was impressed with their home made pasta and daily specials! The service is always good! Try it!

Breakfast at Max's
Reviewer: John from Santa Barbara, CA
We had breakfast at the restaurant this Sunday December 2nd. To say the least we were disappointed in the food. My wife’s scramble was very watery and both of our potato sides were cold. Our waitress asked if my wife would like something else, however we were under a time constraint and time would not allow for a new dish. We asked that the breakfast be taken off the bill. A few minutes later a lady came up to our table and stood in front of us for what seemed a long time but was probably 15 seconds. She said nothing. My wife asked who she was; she said she was the manager. My wife told her about her breakfast (eggs and potatoes) and she asked “what could be done”. My wife stated that she had asked that the meal be taken off our bill. The managers response was “Did you eat any of it” My wife said she was eating the muffin. The Manager stated “I will have to Charge you for the muffin” My Wife and I both have over 30 years in Retail Operations and I must say I have never had anyone in the food industry act so rude and completely disregard the fact that as a customer, we were not happy with the product that was served. She did not offer an apology or anything! Considering the potatoes were “COLD” I would think that this would have raised an issue for her to address with the kitchen. I am sure that the Santa Barbara County Health Department would expect that the food coming from the kitchen is Hot! Considering the cost of acquiring and keeping a good customer in normal times let alone in economic hard times, the cost of a muffin is nothing compared to losing a customer that has been in the restaurant 5 or 6 times in the past 2 months. Needless to say, we will not return and would make sure to tell our friends and family of the way this manager treated a customer. By the way, she never told us her name, never offered an apology or even state she would talk to the cook… Nothing ! After telling my wife she would have to charge us for the muffin, she walked away. She never addressed the fact that my [potatoes were cold as well. Very poor Customer Service John and Toni Clark

fettuccine soup?
Reviewer: Michael from Santa Barbara, CA
First time trying this place for lunch. I ordered the fettuccine with scallops. After about ten minutes the waiter told me that they had NO scallops. This was just before noon. I said how about shrimp fettuccine, OK. Well it was the consistency of a water base soup. The shrimp were alright and the flavor OK but I didn't want soup!

Bday Dinner
Reviewer: Mike F. from Santa Barbara, CA
A friend wanted to take me out for my birthday and suggested Max's. I wasn't very excited about going to this restaurant but I wasn't paying. I was amazed at how good the food was. Our food was as good as one of my fav restaurants, the Montecito Cafe. Interesting art but the decor and plants are STILL Max's cir 1958.

2 Great Recent Dinners here
Reviewer: Leslie from Santa Barbara, CA
The owner is very hospitable & accommodating, & the waiters pleasant. The Veal Marsala is outstanding, my boyfriend had it twice. Caesar salad very good, not overdressed, & the hint of anchovy was perfect. If the Cannolis are ever available for dessert, you must try those (chocolate on one end of the filling, nuts on the other) -- outstanding. This may be our new favorite San Roque dining establishment.

downhill and disappointing
Reviewer: Chris from Santa Barbara, CA
Max's used to have a very nice seafood salad with scallops, shrimp, and crab on greens with a curry dressing. This time the tiny scallops were rubbery - all 3 of them. The shrimp were small and dry, and the purported crab almost untraceable. No bread, no nothing. Had to ask for silverware from a pleasant waiter who dropped off the plates and then disappeared for the duration.

Surprised at how bad it was!
Reviewer: George from Santa Barbara, CA
I first came to Max's many years ago. It is a great little location. While I was here visiting friends we decided to go and revisit the place. The food was amazingly poor - all of our breakfasts were cold and tasteless. There was no attention to service whatsoever. The 'manager' came to our table and she seemed quite pretentious and actually didn't even make sense in her explanations. Won't be going back nor will our friends as it made quite a poor impression.

Great Breakfast
Reviewer: Marna from Toluca Lake, Ca
I had a great breakfast. The biscuts are homemade every morning, the orange juice is fresh & so is the salsa. They support local artists & the service was excellent.

Huevos gringos
Reviewer: John doe from Santa Barbara, CA
Ordered huevos rancheros, I was expecting delicious Mexican style huevos rancheros, the salsa was canned, and tortillas whr pretty soggy as suppose to them being crunchy, the waitress, was pretty rude when confronted about my disgusting breakfast! Won't go back

3 stikes and they're OUT!
Reviewer: Rian from Santa Barbara, CA
I've tried this place 3 times in a month and will never return! First, I had a coupon for Buy 1 Get 1 half off steak dinner, at 7pm they were already out of steak and the place wasnt even packed. So I ordered the Chicken Piccata, which came with 2 very small portions of dry chicken and a small side of potatoes. The price for the size of this meal was outrageous and I was still hungry. We recieved no refills and when I did get refilled, I had to ask for my beverage back. Then breakfast, ordered the french toast, which wasnt covered in brown sugar as advertised. Took over 20min to receive meals and again no refills. My friend & I both agree this restaurant is not worth returning too...

Pretty Good Food, Great Service
Reviewer: Glenn from Buellton
Nice place for out of the way Italian. Maybe not as high end as other places in town but they try to keep it there with really excellent service with nice people/servers. I've had better Italian/fish for the price but its a good place to try especially if you live in the Upper State area. This place is still open as Max's restaurant for bfast lunch with the same stuff as before so probably warrants a different restaurant entry or additional recognition. Local discount card works here.

Super impresssed!
Reviewer: Becca from Santa Barbara, CA
I went to Max's for the second time a few days ago and the food was amazing! The service was a bit on the slow side but the restaurant was also fairly busy. We ordered a combination of breakfast and lunch at our table and everyone was really pleased with the flavor of their food! I can't wait to go back and try something else off their menu!

Nice surprise
Reviewer: Wallace Chafe from Santa Barbara, CA
We hadn't been to Max's in the evening for a while, and didn't realize it was now Italian. Absolutely wonderful food and first class service. A great addition to upper State Street.

So happy Max's Cucina is here!
Reviewer: Vickie from Santa Barbara, CA
Had a wonderful dinner at Max's Cucina tonight. Started with Prosciutto & Melon, then Caprese. Both appetizers were great. Then tried the Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Cream Sauce — a wonderful dish. The gnocchi was light and the cream sauce was rich and flavorful. The highlight of the night was a special - Rack of Lamb with Roasted Potatoes, Mushrooms and Polenta. I could have been in Italy! A fabulous, flavorful dish. And the lamb was cooked perfectly. We finished with Cannoli and Panna Cota - both desserts were delicious. As was the Espresso. This restaurant is a wonderful addition to the San Roque area — we definitely will be going back!

Thrilled to have a new offering in San Roque!
Reviewer: Mission Nick from Santa Barbara, CA
Wonderful wine list. My wife's tortolini with prosciutto was excellent. I had the Osso Bucco special with homemade tagliatelli. It was great. Sometimes you just don't want to deal with the crowds and the parking downtown so it is nice to have this available as an option. For selfish reasons I want this place to succeed. But you should go because it is quite good. Two suggestions: turn up the music a little to drown out the kitchen/waitstaff noise and allow the beef carpacio to come up to temperature. Ours was ice cold and that really diminishes the flavors.

Second time back
Reviewer: Bill from Santa Barbara, CA
Second time to the new Italian dinner restaurant. Amadeo is a gracious host. My tagliatelli con fungi had more mushrooms than pasta. Excellent. The rest of the meal was just as good. They were out of the wine we wanted so they gave us a more expensive bottle for the same price. Very quiet. Nice ambiance. Price very competitive.

Dinner Hopeful
Reviewer: Jan from Santa Barbara, CA
For those who have been to Max's this time around for their dinner offerings now that they are featuring Italian cuisine, did they have tablecloths and candles by chance? I'd be willing to try them again if the dinner atmosphere is a little more intimate than the last time they tried dinner service.

Now serving Italian dinner - watch out Ca Dario!
Reviewer: Jacklyn from Santa Barbara, CA
Max's is now serving really exceptional Italian food for dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Reasonable prices, awesome wine list, great service.

Always great...always has been
Reviewer: Tricia from Santa Barbara, CA
We've been going to Max's for 20 years +. We always enjoy the really yummy food and atmosphere. One of the things we love is the freshness of everything. We love you Max's!!

worst cobb salad I have ever had
Reviewer: Lucy from Santa Barbara, CA
Had lunch here unfortunately. Cobb salad came mixed already with balsamic dressing - lettuce was wilted and brown/black spoiled in places (in Santa Barbara - give me a break! when in doubt THROW IT OUT), tiny amount of blue cheese, edible egg, terrible weird shreds of chicken or turkey, left over bacon cold fatty yuck!. Was served with nothing else - not a cracker or piece of bread. For what I got price way too high. If you want a salad go elsewhere.

Great multigrain pancakes!
Reviewer: Elena from Santa Barbara, CA
Max's is a great place for breakfast - generous portions and prices are reasonable if you stick with the basics. I enjoyed the multigrain pancakes with eggs and bacon. Nice atmosphere although very busy on the weekends so service is a bit slow. During the week it's not a problem at all.

Best Breakfast ever, except MOM's
Reviewer: Ruth McCormack from Whittier, Ca.
It was our first time. We stayed across the street at a not so special motel. Max's breakfast was great, the atmosphere and service were good too. I especially liked the watercolors that were hanging in the dining areas. I was wondering if the artist, Lily Sanders, has a web site where I could review her paintings, one especially we liked the one with a water pitcher and oranges. Thanks, Ruth

Excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner
Reviewer: Sharon G from Santa Barbara, CA
I dine here at least 3 times a week. Max's offers the best breakfast in town with exceptional omlettes and pancakes, as well as other breakfast fare. The breakfast specials are delicious. Lunches are wonderful as well; great burgers, fries, sandwiches and specials every day. Staff is friendly; helpful and attentive; prices are reasonable, food is extremely high-quality (meats from Shalhoobs, produce from Tri-Counties & Farmer's Market, plus everything is homemade = no cans!). Try the Chocolate Marquis or Pecan Pie for dessert!

Excellent Huevos Rancheros
Reviewer: Jeff from Santa Barbara, CA
Very pleased with the huevos rancheros. Best I have had in Santa Barbara, including some other places I tried that were talked up but did not deliver. Max's HR was simply excellent and the salsa was incredible. Coffee was just fine. Service was quite good - very friendly and attentive without smothering me. I was there on a weekday late morning so it wasn't that busy. Very pleased!

Great food – terrible service
Reviewer: CWB from Santa Barbara, CA
My fiancé and I live about 2 blocks from Max’s but we had never eaten there or heard anything about the place. We’re big breakfast fans and when we got our discount cards this year we decided to give it a shot. The restaurant was full when we got there, which is usually a good sign, unfortunately it meant that we waited several minutes for anyone to appear at the front. Once they did, they sat us right away, but then we sat for another 10 to 15 minutes before anyone spoke to us again. My breakfast quesadilla was delicious, but again it took an awkwardly long time for our food to arrive and no one ever came by our table to tell us what was going on. We had to flag someone down twice to request waters. To top it off, our server never checked on our food but about 3 minutes after the food arrived he dropped the check and walked away without saying anything! We were significantly younger than the majority of the clientele, but we are local breakfast lovers who are willing to pay for (and tip on) good food and service. Sorry Max’s, we’ll stick to Cajun Kitchen from now on.

Dinner Not There
Reviewer: Jan from Santa Barbara, CA
We were excited to try Max's for dinner as we do enjoy their breakfast/brunch. We thought perhaps they would add table linens and candles to the tables to change the look for their new evening service. That was not the case. We also found the entrees very mediocre and missing basic culinary appeal and an attractive presentation. They were out of white wine to go with our fish. The entrees were overpriced and when we tried to use our discount card as described in their directory, the offer was 1/2 of what was expected. Also, the manager here really needs to be aware that visiting with only one table multiple times and ignoring all the rest of the tables is really rude and offensive to her other customers. Sorry, a bad taste in our mouth created by the dinner sevice that obviously they do not have ready to execute.

Everything But The Eggs
Reviewer: Paul from Santa Barbara, CA
What you'd expect from a local breakfast place, good coffee, food and decent service. Coffee is a little steep, $2.35, and some items are more than what you'd want to pay for at breakfast. The pancakes and bacon were both excellent. The eggs however, both mine done over medium and my wife's that were scrambled both tasted like cardboard. I've never had eggs that tasted like nothing until Max's. The rest of the food and service was good enough to warrant more trips and hope the egg blandness was a fluke.

Enjoyed Our Breakfast
Reviewer: Anne Rollo from Vancouver, WA
When asked where to meet up for breakfast, my father (who lives in town) suggested Max's on upper State St. Arriving early, a hostess offered to seat myself and spouse. We chose to wait till all arrived. We finally chose a table close to the front, sat down, then realized a table towards the back would be more intimate. The staff was very friendly and accomodating about the change. The casual, laid back, artsy feel of the restaurant made for a relaxing meal. I enjoyed one of the scrambles and heard no complaints from the rest of the party. I am still contemplating purchasing one of the paintings.

Best Breakfasts by far in Santa Barbara
Reviewer: Michael Genung from Fair Oaks, CA
We visit Santa Barbara often and have lost track of how many times we've been to Max's, usually for late breakfast but sometimes lunch. For consistent Quality and Value, it's by far the best. The Service for us has never been a problem whatsoever. I prefer "attentive service" but not obsessive "hovering." For me, I prefer just perceptive and attentive. Max's a coffee shop not a "fine restaurant" and I love the unpretentious aesthetics, the art work / "art show" touch, the "ambiance" and the owner. Henrietta is a doll and her smile makes you put your sun-glasses back on she's so bright! "Two thumbs up", enthusiastically~!~!~!

fresh food, older waiter a lil out of it
Reviewer: chase from Santa Barbara, CA
so, i just went to max's for a late breakfast, and how the special pear, cranberry pancakes, which were very good. my friends bacon and waffle were good as well. the only problem was it took a few minuets to be great(due to host seating ppl so it was fine) and it took sometime to be greeted when setting at the table when it was not that busy. the hostess eventually took my drink order, then a second later the server ask what we would like to drink. only had one refill, which was disappointing because the coffee was very tasty. i left my cup hanging on the edge and when i was done i got my refill. over all people were nice, just be on top of the coffee and the drinks. people said good bye and were nice. another complate was when he asked us if we wanted refills, we were done eating, pushing our food forward with the paper napkins on it, and he allowed them to sit without addressing them, but other tables seemed happy and the food was good so i will be back

Best Veggie benedict
Reviewer: Mark from Santa Barbara, CA
I can always count on a nice breakfast at Max's! I order the veggie benedict and substitute the arichoke hearts for avacodo.(they don't charge for the substitution).Veggie benedict with perfectly poached eggs, sauteed mushrooms, cooked spinach with sliced avacacado on top! They give you extra Hollandaise sauce too! I order the potatoes without onion and they do that for me too. The regular coffee there is good for what it is. If you order a french press, it is even much better. I have been there 20 times and have had a great breakfast good service every time.

Average
Reviewer: Mike from Santa Barbara, CA
Nothing too special, but the food did come to the table hot and everything was fresh. Service was good but it seems like something is missing. I can't figure it out...maybe it's just that they go through the motions here without any enthusiasm, which makes the place and the food seem boring.

Great food, spotty service
Reviewer: Vernon Dozier from Santa Barbara, CA
This is best place in Santa Barbara for breakfast period. The waffles are especially delicious, the light fluffy omelletes are excellent and they always have great specials such as pumpkin pancakes. The coffee is good, the food is always fresh and health minded and you don't walk out of there feeling like you ate a dump truck full of greasy food. With that said the service has had it's problems. Sometimes they take too long, can be forgetfull and at times downright rude. Some also take your order without writing it down (showing off their great memorization skills) only to screw it all up so you have to remind them of things they forgot. The owner is great and she is very hands on. You'll see her working all areas of the restaurant like all great owners do. I just wish she would get control of the poor service problem. Even though I have problems with the service, I always tell people "You gotta try Max's." You won't regret it...

Recommended by friends as we were passing through
Reviewer: Ron Gilead from Palos Verdes, CA
It was our first experience here as we were passing through town due to a horse show. We enjoyed the ambience and our waitress was most delightful. She seemed like someone who should work for 'The Chamber of Commerce' in promoting Santa Barbara. She also offered great suggestions as for our choice off the menu. The menu was wonderful and most engaging - fabulous ingredients are combined here. We rate our food as excellent and our conversation with Kerry was informative and friendly. We hope, certainly that she is appreciated by those who employ her. We will be back many times!!!! Thank you. Ron Gilead from Palos Verdes

Best breakfast we've had in a long time ...
Reviewer: Elizabeth from Los Angeles, CA
We were visiting Santa Barbara & stayed at a hotel on upper State Street. We happened to drive by Max's & noticed that they're a breakfast & lunch only restaurant which is exactly what we were looking for ... breakfast! I must say, my husband & I had a hard time deciding on what to order as the menu is quite extensive & everything sounded delicious. We settled on omelets - hubby went for the gorgonzola & I had the artichoke. Truly outstanding. Great service & the interior is very clean & airy with beautiful artwork displayed. Great service, delicious coffee - we will definitely return to Max's on our next trip back.

I love Max's
Reviewer: kim from Palmdale, CA
I love Max's, the food, the service, the atmosphere, everything. The service at Max's is great. They treat you like family, they are freindly and happy to see you when you come in and the food is awesome. Everytime I am in town, my sister and I go at least once.

Good place
Reviewer: Neil from Santa Barbara CA
I went there with my parents for my birthday on a Sunday around noon. It was easy to get in (they accept reservations), the menu gave us a lot of choice, every dish was excellent, and the service was also good. We had a great time.

Friendly, welcoming, excellent food & service.
Reviewer: Mary A. Wood from Santa Barbara
From the moment you enter to the moment you leave, you will be treated with smiles and excellent service. The food is fixed to your satisfaction, is tasty, fresh, healthy, and presented on an attractive plate. I really appreciate Henrietta, Nora, Inez, Nancy, Carlito, and the entire staff: thank you..

Max's Review
Reviewer: Priscilla Stessen from Santa Barbara, CA
I just recently moved here and was recommended this restaurant from a friend. The food was pretty good, but when I arrived it was extremely busy and I had to wait 10 minutes for a table, which was fine, except for the fact that there was no busboy in sight and it was evidently impossible for much of anyone else to clean the tables because everyone was so busy. My waiter was very friendly, yet there was a woman walking around talking to everybody, sort of annoying.

They just can't get it right....
Reviewer: Mike from Santa Barbara, CA
I keep trying to like Max's, but they just can't quite get it right. On Sunday, June 22, the service was extremely slow, but when the servers do come out of the back, they were very nice and pleasant. My coffee came right away, but my wife's tea and the actual order taking was 20+ minutes later. The breakfast was nothing outstanding, nor was it bad. Just kinda blah. I prefer the much more spartan but better food and better prices at Steve's Patio. I just wish Max's could get it together.

very disappointing
Reviewer: Kathryn from Santa Barbara
The best thing about this place is that the hostess was very prompt and kind. However we waited for our server to take our order for about 20 mins (it was not particularly busy). We would have been fine if they had apologized to us for the wait when they finally came; which they did not. By the time we got our food, it was not how we ordered it, but we were so hungry we decided to just eat it as is. The food was mediocre. The sauce should come on the side so as not to overwhelm the plate. I was disappointed that the server never checked on us to see how we were doing, if we needed anything, never had waters brought to the table, we had to flag down additional staff to bring us the bill. It was not the best experience I've had in a restaurant.

great service, great coffee
Reviewer: chee from sb, ca
me and my friend went there this morning for brunch, and it was really tasty! the place was relatively packed, but the service was still stellar. the coffee was really bold and strong, especially for a diner-type restaurant (me likey). the interior decor is pretty "elbows-on-the-table" and the menu had some really innovative-sounding items (i.e., African lamb stew, strawberry pancakes, seafood omelette, etc.), plus the regular breakfast items...my omelette was a little buttery-tasting for my taste, but overall, I'd definitely recommend this place for brunch :)

Really nice breakfast
Reviewer: Dana Alexander from Santa Barbara
We had a delightful meal at Max's. Food and coffee were great and the service was excellent. Love that you can get real maple syrup (haven't seen that anywhere else in SB).

ok food poor service
Reviewer: Burte from Goleta
Another breakfast experience from last weekend: Food was ok, nothing fancy or intriguing. But our waiter was simply sleeping on foot. He forgot to bring biscuits which come with the meal, and then never showed up for anything, in the check we realized that we were charged for other coffee drinks rather than the ones we got...It was corrected but I don't think I will go there again...Food is not interesting enough.

Really miss the Best breakfast served in Santa Barbara
Reviewer: Mary Rose from Redding, CA
I miss Max's for breakfast every Sunday since I moved to the north state and it's been years. If you love hot cereal and hot bread you won't beat this breakfast meal. The multigrain hot cereal grain served with raisins, walnuts and brown sugar, a couple of their biscuits that are so wonderfully prepared smelling yeast like and a cup of coffee makes for a great start. If you can keep from slathering the biscuit with butter it's a healthy meal. If it's not on the menu any longer we all lose.

Cute place for Brunch
Reviewer: Russell from LA area, CA
A really cute place for sunday brunch, very tastefully decorated, with a widely varied menu. Speaking as a student, this place is nice enough to make me feel like I can go to real-person restaurants without body-slamming my wallet. It feels tucked-away in spite of being right on upper state street, which adds to the charm.

Excellent breakfast cafe
Reviewer: Nora from Santa Barbara, CA
Shoots the gap between D'Angelo and Tupelo on the one hand and Cajun Kichen on the other. For those days when pre-fab hashbrowns won't do and fancy-schmany is just too much.

Great Place to Eat
Reviewer: Matthew Berger from Santa Barbara, CA
I reluctantly write a great review for fear that too many people will find out about this jewel of a restaurant in Santa Barbara. Friendly efficient service, great breakfasts (especially the Guatamalan Omelette), great lunches, great coffee, and great prices, all make this a wonderful, low-key place to dine. Highly recommended

Consistency of Quality
Reviewer: Michael from Sacramento, California
We´ve been regulars at Max´s since first being introduced to it by my sister a while back. We try to get by there at least once during each visit to Santa Barbara. We´ve enjoyed it for its consistency of quality of food and its service. The atmosphere is comfortable, very light, unpretentious. Good value for the dollar and the coffee is amazingly excellent! "Two thumbs up."

Great food, service, and great coffee!

We tried Max´s with a coupon and have been going back ever since. If you´re not watching your carbs, the orange pecan pancakes are to die for. I have never had anything I didn´t like there. I get tired of the the same old restaurant coffee (no flavor, just strong), and Max´s coffee is coffee-house quality. If you go more than once, you´ll notice a lot of regulars.
