dissapointed diner
Reviewer: sandy from Santa Barbara, CA
I expected a better experience after reading reviews. Taco's are samll and not that cheap.(compare to Rudy's giant chicken taco, same price) or Lillie's small but yummy for 1/2 the price. While the theme is unique ,the food was just ok and the attitude of the staff very blah. Finally the coke was totally flat and what chips? We didn't get see any chips.

Great Place!

First visit to El Taco Tequila and it was great food. Fun selection, quality ingredients, good margaritas, decent price and 'hey' no more plastic cups. Good service too. I definitely recommend.

Pink Taco called and they want their theme back.

Read all the other reviews and feel like we ate at different places. Let's just say the restaurant broke the cardinal rule, they ran out of chips. If you run out of chips GO BUY SOME!!! We still gave them a shot and ordered miscellaneous tacos -- the diversity of the taco selection was awesome, but the final product fell short. The flavors needed to be intensified, richer sauces with spicier flavors. People who like tacos don't tend to be afraid of heat. I hope the restaurant keeps improving but I'm worried for them....

If you don't eat meat, this is a great place for tacos. Not beans and cheese, but mushrooms and onions, or marinated tofu, or sautéed vegetables (3 choices for vegetarians!). They have fish tacos and shrimp tacos. And for the carnivores, they have a great selection, chicken duck, pork, beef, whatever. The corn tortillas are cooked to order, not in advance, and are good enough to eat with salsa (not that you will, because you will want the whole taco). Speaking of whole tacos, hey don't have enchiladas, or burritos or tostados. just tacos (and some side dishes). But the tacos are incredible. And the service is very quick. The tequila selection is also exceptional. The decor and atmosphere is noticeable (as I usually don't notice those things). I normally don't write restaurant reviews, but this place is great, and I want to make sure it stays around a while. How do you get line spacing in these reviews?

Easy on the salt

I went here for dinner yesterday. I was expecting it to be crowded but it was quite the opposite. There were customers but not many. You order at the counter and do pickup at the window. The place is very clean obviously (since it's new) and the decor is very kitchy and purposefully designed. What I mean is it's obvious the interior decorator was trying to make the place look authentic. It wasn't very organic. No matter, onto the food. I got the skirt steak, pork shoulder, and duck mole. I also got the gaucamole and the papaya and pineapple drink. The skirt steak was my favorite, which was a surprise because how could you go wrong with pork shoulder and duck? Well let me tell you how - salt. I am not shy when it comes to salt but the pork was extremely salty and the duck mole (which was the most expensive taco by double) was virtually inedible. The meat was moist and the mole sauce was great but I couldn't get over eating a saltlick. I ended up tossing about a third of the taco even though I wasn't hungry. Now for the positives - the handmade tortillas rock and are actually a little more bready and crispy than Super Rica. I like both styles but this is unique, in a good way. The gaucamole is delicious, as are the frescas drinks. Now for the kicker. The three tacos, gauc and drink cost $26. Just remember that if you think this is some taco joint you are going to stop into for a casual meal. I'd go back but definitely trying other tacos, especially the seafood and vegetarian options. Also, the corn on the cob sounds amazing.

Very Interesting Place

This is a great looking place, no doubt about that and the food is pretty darn good too. We got there about 1:30pm on a Sat and tried to order 5 different tacos but they were out of ingredients for several of their selections so we were a bit limited. I loved the #3 (spiced pork, roasted onion and goat cheese) but felt the #6 (chicken, onion, poblano and cheese) was decent but unremarkable. Truth be told I would have ordered several other versions had they been available but what can you do!? Its nice that they have selections in pork, beef, chicken, seafood and veggie, everyone will find something they like (assuming its available:-) Pricing ranges from $3.00-$4.25 per taco and yes its supposed to be street food style so its just one taco no sides or garnish. (there is a duck one for $7.50 but all others are in $3-$4 range). 3 tacos filled me up fine and I'm not a little guy so figure $10-$12 for a full meal. We had a couple cokes also which were $2 each for a small cup which I think is bit excessive though when I asked they did give a free refill (there's no fountain its just from behind the bar). There's no mention of refills on the menu so if you don't ask you're SOL. Overall, we we're reasonably happy with our first Tequila Taqueria experience and really look forward to going back. There are several other tacos that I want to try and going by their descriptions they should be delicious.

Awesome new place

We popped in here for lunch right before the 4th of July parade. 2 adults & 2 kids. Place was empty when we got there and a third full when we left. We just ordered a few different tacos and quesadillas and my wife and I had the margaritas. Super super tacos -- simple but with lots of meat and delicious grilled veggies, and the taco shell itself had real flavor. Drinks were awesome too -- not overly sweet like everywhere else. It's only counter service, so I don't know how well things run when they're crowded, but the bartender brought our food and drinks to our table and was super attentive. Having kids with us was no problem at all, although I don't know if I'd try that at night when it may be more of a bar scene. It's a small space but nicely done inside with a lot of attention to detail and decoration, plus a small lounge on the back patio. The menu is VERY basic but they have definitely zeroed in on just a few items and knocked it out of the park. Great new spot compared to some of the junk that's on lower State.

mmmmmmmm!

Writing this review at the resaurant. Just finished the 2 most delicous tacos of my LIFE. I ordered the #2 ( rosemary beef skirt steak ) and the #12 shrimp (exquistely smokey and full of flavor!)...my roommate had the #1 (coca cola Beef brisket ) and the #3. ground pork.... Their tacos are simply delicious. The taco fillings are flavorful and you don't need salsa to enjoy them....but if you're a spice fiend like me, you'll enjoy their assortment of salsas (hot and spicy...indulge with caution)

Not your ordinary tacos
Reviewer: Steve from Santa Barbara, CA
Beautifuly designed interior. Can't wait to return at night. The 4 tacos we chose were perfect. Each one so unique and wonderful tasting. We had #'s 2 5 7 & 11. I could eat the #2 skirt steak everyday it was so good. The #5 pork was very tender, the #7 duck w/ mole was super rich, and the #11 fish was lightly battered w/ a nice cream sauce. The homemade tortillas were the best we've had locally. Can't wait to return.

Great time last night, will come back

We went there last and really enjoyed the tacos. They were a good size for the price and the beer and tequila was reasonable. Margaritas are only $5! I will come back again.

Excellent!

Alex, the prices are for 1 taco. The tortillas are handmade and they are generous portions. They really did a good job with this the decor and menu. Simple and somewhat complex. The ingredients are fresh and they got very creative with the recipes and what they put in the tacos without it being too overdone. The salsas at the salsa bar are VERY good and they include several choices and sides (roasted chilis/onions and cilantro, pickled onions, etc). I've tried 4 tacos and my favorites so far are the Bistec Tampiqueno and Hongos y Rajas. Huge tequila bar and friendly staff. I can't wait to try the Pato con Mole!!

Maybe GO THERE and find out

Price Question
Reviewer: Alex from Santa Barbara, CA
The prices on the menu of 4.75, etc, are those for one single taco or do you get 2 or 3 tacos?
