Last July I wrote that a “For Sale” sign has appeared in the window at Judge For Yourself Cafe, 1218 Santa Barbara Street. Reader Jennifer M. now says that a “Restaurant Space for Lease” is also displayed on the building. I called the business and was told that the restaurant has been for sale but there have been no buyers. I was also told that they will remain open until the end of the year and that they might close in 2025 but that is uncertain at this point.

It would be a big deal if they were to close. Yes the building is out of date and tiny but it’s one of a very few old school diners still around. Not run by a big corporation, good food, huge menu
I think they did some renovations recently that spruced up the old-diner look somewhat. The menu was also redone, I didn’t see the old court-themed items. I hope it doesn’t change too much as I love those kinds of time-capsule places. This is probably the most quintessential little diner in SB.
As I understand, a change in ownership triggers code and ada compliance upgrades. Can’t just stay in operation, change ownership and not update.
Could be wrong.
I used to frequent this restaurant many times. Loved the quality and quaint atmosphere.
Hope they continue on.
The landlord seems to be blocking their ability to transfer the remaining lease. Very sad to see another mom and pop shop close like this.
