QUESTION OF THE DAY

Hi John,

Not a tip, but a request for help. I’m trying to find a recipe or even an ingredient list for a dish I used to enjoy at Hector’s Mexican Restaurant, which was located in Goleta on Calle Real behind the 7-Eleven. The dish was called “Soft Chicken Tacos.” It was a chicken mixture with almonds and raisins, inside tortillas, baked in a creamy sauce with white cheese.

If any of your readers remember this dish or know a way I can find it, I’d be very grateful! I’m living far from Santa Barbara now in a place with almost no Mexican food at all, and have been trying to learn to cook all my favorites.

Thanks!

Loved the beans at Hector’s! A fond memory from the early ‘90s.

Try a site called: realmomkitchen.com and enter “chicken cream cheese tacos” it’s not the exact recipe you were looking for, but you can add raisins and almonds and it might be a good substitute. Enjoy!

I found a chicken recipe made with almonds and raisins, “Almendrado Chicken,” on a site called “PatiJinich.com,” who has a 3X James Beard award winning show on PBS called “Pati’s Mexican Table.” She makes authentic Mexican food and comes from a family of chefs, cooks, and foodies. Perhaps this chicken is what was in Hector’s Tacos. I look forward to Hector’s recipe as well.
