FLOR DE MAIZ BRINGS OAXACAN CUISINE TO THE WATERFRONT

Flor de Maiz is the newest restaurant to open on the Santa Barbara waterfront, at 29 East Cabrillo Boulevard, in the former home of El Torito. The old El Torito space was divided up into two restaurant venues, the other being Oku Sushi which opened last October.

Flor de Maiz is introducing the latest concept from restaurateur Carlos Luna and the talented team behind the Los Agaves Restaurants. Flor de Maiz celebrates the innovative cuisine of Oaxaca, a region in Mexico with a centuries-old legacy as a center of Mexican culinary culture, and whose cuisine is internationally renowned. Flor de Maiz features an open kitchen where guests can watch fresh tortillas being made, alongside a lively bar that opens onto prime patio seating with views of Stearns Wharf, the Harbor and the beautiful Santa Barbara coastline. Maybe a better spot than Vicenta’s? I only ate there once but was blown away, and bummed to hear it closed. Maybe this new spot will have the drinks and apps I enjoyed.

We ate at Flor de Maiz last night and loved it. The service was good, beautiful atmosphere and delicious food. They have 5 kinds of mole sauce. We had octopus ceviche and guacamole for appetizers and Mole negro con pollo, enchiladas verde and flan for dessert. All were very tasty and delivered quickly to our table. The space is large enough and they have 2 patio areas. I’d recommend this place to my friends for sure.

I think Oaxaca has the best food in Mexico. Tamales de pollo en mole negro, wrapped in banana leaves, and the salsa verde from La Catedral in Oaxaca city are my idea of heaven.

Just had a fabulous dinner here. The food was fresh, flavorful and delicious. We had the mahi mahi tacos and ahi tacos. Both were excellent and I would highly recommended them.
There were many bustling servers and they were attentive to our needs. The food came out to the table quickly.
The ambiance in this restaurant is very soothing. We were at the restaurant after dark, but I am sure the ocean view during they day will be stunning!
