AN EMPIRE FALLS

Sad news from reader Rondi: “For John Dickson, The Restaurant Guy in the Independent: We went to Empress Palace [at 2251 Las Positas Road] Wednesday for lunch and there was a ‘closed’ sign on the front door.  Upon further inspection, there was an eviction notice posted from the SB Superior Court.  What a shock!  They have been around for years.  Will miss their walnut shrimp dish.” I tried calling to confirm but their phone number is disconnected. Their web site empresspalace1.com says Empress Palace is open for business as usual.

Not wishing anyone a lack of success, but perhaps this is for the better, as the prices listed on their menu were completely out of sync with other like-restaurants ($18 for a plate of soy chicken, etc.?). I couldn’t help but feel they were trying to “cash in” on unsuspecting travelers via their off-ramp location. For many years that spot was a Mexican restaurant, but regardless of who comes in next, I hope it will be good food reasonably priced, as it’s a perfect place to stop in after the beach or meet friends “in the middle” between SB and Goleta.

They were my parents favorite place, but as was mentioned their prices got so high we stopped frequenting there.

To give them some slack, I heard the rent was enormous. Same thing happening all around Santa Barbara.

It would be a perfect indoor/outdoor seating Mexican Food, with cocktails and a casual menu! The atmosphere was very grim, and needs some serious remodeling…but I think the possibilities are endless!
