THE SPACE FORMERLY KNOWN AS ITALIAN AND GREEK DELI UPDATE

This just in from reader Primetime: “Verizon has now closed at 636 State Street. For years it was the famous Italian and Greek Deli with the oil soaked delicious torpedo subs. The deli closed in 2007.” Perhaps this space has food in its future?

    One can only hope.

I wish they would restore the old outside wall…it was so homey looking. We need more of that small town feel back in Santa Barbara, I think

    • LoFi Girl says:

I wholeheartedly agree, dmo! Restore that wall. Putting a Verizon store in there broke my heart. I STILL to this day miss the Greek Italian Deli. I went there for lunch often. The boys were so cute who worked there, and there was such a small town family vibe. Miss it. Oh, how Santa Barbara has changed… and not for the better.

I think I remember that old brick wall. It was really cool.

Likely had a 10 year lease. Continued deterioration of downtown State Street. Verizon would have stayed if the customers were there.

  4. Art says:

Believe it or not Johnney’s has been gone for 20 years.

  5. Deb says:

We NEED Johnny’s Back, or at least a DECENT, authentic Deli….mouth is watering! 🙂

  6. Mike says:

All the Verizon employees were laid off, rent was increased from $28,000 a month to $32,000. Here’s the real kicker…a marijuana dispensery wants to move in!
