CANTWELL’S CLOSES IN SUMMERLAND

Cantwell’s Summerland Market at 2580 Lillie Avenue opened in July 2008, and now nearly ten years later, closed its doors as its 10-year lease expires. The Cantwell’s Market & Deli on State Street continues to be open for business as usual. Owners Jim and Carla Gally were ready to move on and put the Summerland location up for sale but the owner of the building did not agree to lease to any potential buyers of the business so it had to be liquidated.  The Gallys sold the Santa Barbara location last year which was started by Tom Cantwell in 1981.

Cantwell’s will be missed. Great for picking up extras and the deli was so good.

For years it was a very good business with a great variety of foods and deli, but it was maybe 12-15 months ago I noticed a big change in service and a food preparation. It really was noticeable! I thought I had seen a notice about ownership changing. Anyways, the store was always clean and well kept.

It’s a great location for a food business, so we shall see if something like that goes in.

Steve, you’re so right! I work right around the corner, and have been going to Cantwell’s for years. The service and quality of the food has plummeted with the new ownership, and I feel so bad for the long-time staff and customers.

Any idea of who is moving in?!
