From reader Bruce:

“We read with anguish your announcement in The Independent that Tupelo Junction closed. The only place in Santa Barbara to get hush puppies. Where are we to go for that Southern fix? An over-statement and you just reported. But if you find another place in Santa Barbara please me know. Finding an alternative would help this Northern boy impress a Southern belle.”

Finch and Fork has had them in the past but looking at their current menu online it looks like they are not there.

I am sorry to hear of their closing but frankly, Tupelo’s hush puppies were no great shakes imo. I tried them at least twice and found them to be unpleasantly heavy and dense. The best I’d had were from the dear departed Georgia’s Smokehouse.. dipped in their green goddess dressing. Yum.

Wildwood Kitchen will have them after the first of the year. Menu change coming… Insider info

I loved Tupelo but not their hush puppies. My advice is to make them at home. My absolute favorite southern cookbook is , “Bon Appetite Y’all” by Virginia Willis (Chauncers Books). Beautiful southern low country recipes with a nod to French technique. Good luck:)
