Many readers emailed me to let me know that a public notice of application to sell alcoholic beverages has appeared at 1226 State Street (next to the Granada), in the spot formerly occupied by Ultimate Bagels, Coffee Bean, and Santa Barbara Sandwich Company. The application was filed by the Sportsman Lounge LLC. Of course there is always a chance that this will be a second location but that seems unlikely because Sportsman Lounge is just a block or so away at 20 West Figueroa Street.

  3. Justine says:

Was just gonna say… I know it’s not far distance-wise, but it seems like a whole other neighborhood.

  4. Hefe says:

Rand new build out won’t be a dive anymore.

  5. Nana Jill says:

A dive is a dive, and it’s our dive. One of the last bastions of our S.B. Wrong, wrong, wrong. NOT going to happen.

  6. Jonathan says:

The rent on their previous location was going to be raised a lot. This in not going to be a second location.

  7. Milo says:

Dive bars are historical monuments. This is a travesty. Look at Mel’s for example. Never the same.

  8. Gerald Bostock says:

    My dive bar was Freeman’s/Jimboz.
Spent a few Toys for Tots after parties at Sportsman. Indeed, it will not be the same.

  9. Steve Mac says:

My favorite dive bar was The Ofice, located on State Street. Pool room in the back, with shots served in jelly glasses. I think a firefighter named Jimmy bought it. Does anyone know what happened to its great signage?

  10. Juan Miguel says:

Jimbos! Palmieris. I hope this doesn’t go the way of Mel’s. At least it’s still on State! It’s not the dive bars fault the City council has slowly stripping everything cool from State Street and the Funk Zones (killed the food trucks)

  11. Don Seaman says:

I can’t remember all the times I have been 86’d from the sportsman Don Seama
