Food editor George Yatchisin tells me that the Santa Barbara Independent is holding its 3rd Annual Sizzling Summer BBQ/Cocktail Contest and is looking for entries. Submit recipes to by Tuesday, May 29, 5 p.m.

    I looked at last year’s contest details and they are really confusing. Do the finalists have to cook in front of the judges or can they bring half finished products? Barbecue takes all day and what you can do in two hours allotment is grilling not barbecuing.

    Hi, Lily! To be honest, we’re still working on the details of the actual judging. We might be holding the event where contestants can actually grill. Even if we do that, you can bring items prepared, pre-cooked, -brined, -rubbed, whatever it takes, or do it all on site. And we also welcome the broadest possible definition of BBQ, so “just” grilling counts, too. What we most are looking for is tasty summer on a plate.
