Sunny Pujji, owner of Spice Avenue in downtown Santa Barbara and Naan Stop in Isla Vista, has opened India Club restaurant at 5701 Calle Real in Goleta, the former home of Pick Up Stix.

Pujji tells me “We’re excited to be here. We offer fantasic food and fantastic service. Come and try it out!” Working with Pujji is Ramesh Govindraj, a 5-star chef from South India and manger Amir Almeida. India Club was named after Pujji’s grandfather’s restaurant on the Strand in London.

India Club’s menu, which caters to a residential clientele, offers a diverse selection in the price range from $10.95 – $13.95. The menu is divided up into categories and includes the Vegetable Platter (7 options), Lamb Platter (4 options), Chicken Platter (7 options), Tandoori Platter (3 options), Seafood Platter (4 options) and Biriyani Platter (4 options). All meals include rice, salad and raita (yoghurt dip).

Pujji tells me that one of the most popular items is the Chicken Chetinadu for $11.95 which consists of coconut, curry leaves, special chettinadu and coconut milk. I tried several dishes while visiting India Club and the Chicken Chetinadu was indeed my favorite.

Boba fans will be happy to learn that India Club offers a variety of boba drinks including 7 boba green teas, 13 boba milk teas, 14 boba snow bubble drinks and more.

India Club is open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner is served from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. For more information call (805) 967-7171. In the near future you will be able order food to-go using their web site at

    I had lunch here today.. The Lamb Vindaloo was great. I loved it. The Naan was nice and crisp. Rice was good. Potatos were great.. Nice spice to everything. Great flavor. I didnt expect anything but the best coming from the owners of Spice Avenue. I broght some stuff to my Girlfriend who is not quite familuar with Indian Food and she loved everything I brought her. Very happy this place is open. Best reastaurant in Goleta by far

    Gee the last guy did not know these people or anything right? Food pretty good but pricey over a buffet. They have got Goletans by the somasas if they are craving Indian and don’t want to drive towards SB though. No buffet in the future(=long wait for food so call in), you can just get “plates” of things, naan bread is extra $. Same layout as Pickup Stix w/no soda fountain(Blenders!). I wish as a rule they would put utensils/napkins into to go orders, nickel and dime me a little more please.

        Food and service is there if you read it again(pretty good food, no untensil service “to go”). I’m not getting paid to write reviews so get what you can out of it is what I would recommend or don’t read it.

          But I would encourage you to write your own reviews especially to tell me that I’m full of it with respect to the food/service, I kind of did the same thing to Nik as whenever I hear “the best in whatever by far” I think someone has a hidden agenda and I’ll bet they have not tried every place in Goleta like I have(minus the high end Bacara ones) to make that claim(which I even won’t). I tend to throw in ambience comments also which don’t always fit the food/service that this website has but I feel it needs to be said. But please try places yourself to contribute to this website for all of us. I’m also no cuisine expert and I’ll just give my honest opinion, good bad or ugly.

        I’m trying to figure out a place where we can meet. A place with a lot of meat for you and endless soda for me. We can start a poll about it. Something with a soda fountain that is good and daily replaced(rules out McD etc) but serves a lot of meat and hardly any vegetables. Cal Taco comes to mind. I’m there!

        Yes! Yes We Do!! Its so incredibly cheap for the proprietor and much appreciated by the diners. ( if they can have it at a fast food place you can certainly have it at a mid level joint!!)

    I thought the food was delicious, fresh, clearly all house-made. Portion sizes were perfectly generous. The restaurant is spotless and my service was professional and efficient.
    I think there are sufficient choices available. However, I tend to think restaurants offer better quality when they dont try to be all things to all people, but rather focus on doing their food well.
    As to the buffet comments, I am a bit confused as to when it became expected that Indian restaurants offer buffets. We dont expect that about Mexican or Thai or Italian places, and I dont expect it from an Indian restaurant. If you would like variety, it is easy enough for your party to order different entrees to share while having your own rice & salad, etc. As to the silly comments about plastic utensils and all-you-can-drink fountain, really, who cares? Just ask nicely as you would in any non-fastfood joint, and they will happily oblige.

    With a South Indian chef, it would be really nice to FINALLY see an Indian place serving some South Indian cuisine like idli or dosa instead of the *same old* menu. I guess that’s asking a lot in an area like SB/Goleta, but still, it’s on my wish list. The Chetinadu dish is one concession to the cuisine of South India, it seems. Still, the most unusual (least boring) Indian menu in town still goes to All-India Cafe on lower state — at least they have some things that are not the usually saag/korma/tandoor schtick. I do look forward to trying this new location and I wish the Pujji’s success!

    Agree with Charlotte. Their upper state mother restaurant buffet is good. Though the IV one is good for something quick and ready(heated food ready for you but not a buffet). The Goleta one straddles the two where they have to prepare it which equals long wait and pricey but they are counting on conveinence for Goleta folk who call it in and don’t want to go to IV or SB so we will see how they do.

    By the way, I’ve lived places with large Indian populations too (!) and there are plenty of places that don’t have lunch buffets. If you want a lunch buffet, then don’t go there. That’s totally fine and your prerogative.

    Also, what’s with the CAPITAL letters?

      They weren’t bullying me, but another guy previously and I commented. I have tougher skin than that! All I’m saying is that a buffet is an affordable option to a menu ( especially if your alone and want a variety without having to order family style). So guess what? I go to Spice downtown!

    The Restaurant Spice I was referring to. The Naan Stop has a Cafeteria like option for a buffet. It is straight forward and cheap which works for I.V. But in Goleta, we want more menu options, yet keeping it affordable, hence the buffet! Voila!

    This place keeps advertising a vegan dosa festival on the weekends….they don’t know what “vegan” means, so beware. Last time I checked, lamb, chicken, etc. aren’t vegan! I was excited about the food, but had to leave when they couldn’t figure out that vegan means no animal products whatsoever not just “no milk”.

    I tried their food, yes the food is yum and fresh..but the dinner portion, i am not sure..I think the price is expensive..First they need to realize which category they wanna be in..The semi-service, get your own silverware and water thing and order at the counter you would expect that the resturant will reduce the cost of the food, since they are saving on a lot of full time servers..But looks like they want to have their cake and eat it too..

    This is probably my favorite indian restaurant in the SB area. Their dishes are far more authentic and have a lot of flavor. I think it has much more flavor than the food at spice ave, I was really impressed. The chutney and raita are all you can eat, which is great because I always run out of raita. The portions are large, with enough to take home. The platters come with potatoes and lentils also, so if you order only a meat entree, you still get a well balanced meal.

    Just as an update, they do serve Dosas and Utappams on Saturday from 12 to 3 pm. I dont think they have done enough advertising but they ought to, because the dosas were really good. What was surprising was the freshness of the coconut chutney (yum!) and they even offered us Payasam (sweet dish) at the end. Reasonably authentic (If you discount the chicken dosa). I hope it becomes more popular so that it remains for a whie.

    Glen needs to get into the 21st century and maybe should stay with Jack in the Box or Mickey D’s because this is real food done by highly trained chefs and it is a craft when its done right, like it is in this restaurant. A buffet is available at their downtown S B establishment and it isn’t the end of the world if they are concentrating on special plates. The prices are reasonable for a restaurant these days. Has Glen read the news or seen a news show about crop costs, and a whole other problem with sources and he will probably answer not my problem. Well it is if your complaining about really good Indian Cuisine, that word means upper level, highest quality, the freshest ingredients etc. etc.
    Not that your interested, Ive been an Certified Executive Chef for over 50 years. Maybe this place is too high class for you so I’m sure your Denny’s combo meal or the wonderful dinners at the Tree House Restaurant will be forever be your choice. Get a life!

I think you write these answers just to see your name in print, but I really think you should stick with the major chains because you love their price and get a soda for a buck, you must be a real food maven, opinion or not.

          No I just want to inform the public of my experience like anyone else should on this website, so we know how to spend our hard earned money. No I don’t just go to the chain places Chef but I’m not too proud to say I do. How about saying something constructive instead of trying to bash other people. Like I like or don’t like this place for such a reason…. Bashing people does no good and it makes you look like you have a hidden agenda so I apologize if you don’t. If you are a chef how about putting some stuff out there so we can learn from you.

    Yeah I wish this place luck. Seems like they have to jump over Flavor of India and All India Cafe in my opinion to be the best. But any Indian food is better than some other places in town, it keeps me going back to heat lamp Naan Stop once a month. This place has to realize that simple buffets, non stop Naan and good customer service are all the average joe like me requires in this town but maybe they will get enough business from others, we will see.

    I have been eating here for a few months as it has been one of my favorites since they arrived, but I just had a really bad experience I need to get off my chest. I went to eat lunch today and after ordering it took 45 minutes to get our food. To make things worse, several customers that came after us were served before us. As previous reviews have noted, the food is a little bit pricey for what you get, so I usually just go for the lunch special during the week. Unfortunately, it looks like this is the plan that everybody else is taking as well. I won’t be eating here as often as I used to because I only have an hour for my lunch break from work and don’t want to be stuck staying after hours simple because my lunch took too long to get to my table. I was willing to overlook the price so long as I could get the minimum amount of service in order to get out the door within the hour. Sadly, I did not get this service and will only be eating here when I have some time to burn.

    I totally agree with Glenn….I am not a buffet kind of gal but I happen to love the Indian buffet, (Spice being my favorite w/ same owners as India Club) All the usual suspects are present along with some surprises that I would normally never order. One can languish over lunch or get in and out….for not much $$. Works for me.
