Last week I reported that employees of Ruth’s Chris Steak House had informed me that the restaurant was going to close June 19th but management would not confirm or deny it. Now it is official and the date is indeed the 19th.  Ruth’s Chris opened in La Cumbre Plaza during November 2007.

This is sad news. My family loved celebrating birthdays and other events at Ruth’s. We will miss this restaurant very much. The food was superb and the service excellent. We are so sorry to see them leave Santa Barbara.

We, too, will miss the place. Even though the a la carte menu was on the high side the food was generally worth the price.

Additionally, the “Bistro Menu” in the bar represented good value at lower prices for those times we didn’t (or wouldn’t) splurge on the higher-priced items. That was a good effort when the recession hit.

I must confess to being amused when they first opened with the valet parking service – “Allow us to park your car 10 feet away in one of the hundreds of parking lot spots.”

On the other hand, after several drinks, a 4-pound steak with potatoes, vegetables and dessert I was happy to have the valet staff roll me out the door and right into my car curbside! Don’t know if I could have walked those extra 10 feet to the parking spaces.

Oh, God, don’t let an eatery come in that features tofu and sprouts. Let my arteries clog up they way they were meant to – with corn-fed beef and plenty of fat.

My wife and I ate there last night to celebrate our anniversary, and the table had scattered rose petals and a hand-written card. Very classy. The staff confirmed what we suspected. The service and food quality were as good as ever (although they were out of the tuna). I understand the next closest location is in Woodland Hills…

This is too bad as the place has the best steaks in town and always had fantastic service. I always thought the location was simply too big. The outdoor patio was almost never in use and the main dining room was frequently empty. I have no idea what place would survive in that space. A Cheesecake Factory is the only thing I can think of……

Mastro’s Steakhouse would be a good fit there. We were never impressed with RC and will travel to T.O. or L.A. for truly exceptional steak dinners.
