History

Holy Cross is situated on the Santa Barbara Mesa and was dedicated in 1960. It replaced nearby St. Joseph's Chapel as a spiritual gathering place for residents of the Mesa. St. Joseph's Chapel was dismanteled in the 1950s to make way for the then-new US Highway 101. Many assumed the name St. Joseph's would remain, but in 1959 news came from the Chancery that the Church would be named after the small island visible from the front of the Church, Holy Cross (Santa Cruz).
