Sandcastle Festival
East Beach, Santa Barbara

The annual Santa Barbara Sandcastle Festival is an exciting and fun way to celebrate the beautiful ocean and beaches, two of our community's greatest natural resources. Festival admittance is free, and the cost to compete in the sandcastle & sculpture contest is minimal.

On a Saturday each September (see web site for date), East Beach becomes a lively place thanks to this annual sandcastle and sculpting contest. The festival benefits the Citizens Planning Association (CPA) and the Citizens Planning Foundation (CPF), which promote environmental protection and proper land planning in Santa Barbara County.

The event includes a sandcastle building contest with prizes, sand trap miniature golf, free sand candle making and live music. There is food and refreshments available, and other activities lined up. The sand castle competition requires no previous experience, and every team is limited to ten people. Each team is only allowed to use sand and water as structure materials, though they may use any type of sculpting tools, whether plastic knives, spoons or combs. The finished creations will be evaluated by a panel of judges and spectators will vote for the "People's Choice Awards."
