Reviews by the General Public

My family has enjoyed this restaurant since they first opened in Santa Barbara. The food has been consistently good. Nevertheless, we will not be returning! As loyal customers it's not unreasonable to expect a warm welcome, or "Can I bring you anything else", or a "thank you for coming." The staff is devoid of any hospitality or warmth. Thankfully, there are other Indian food options.

I have been going to this place for the past 8 years, the food is good and the service is excellent. The family which runs the place is very friendly, one time I called then about the chicken not being good and they apologized and made sure that all was good next time, they also gave me some free desert.I would recommend the peshwari naan and veg korma. You can also ask for chappatii instead of naan's for your lunch buffer

Great Indian Food
Reviewer: Henry from Santa Barbara, CA
This was the first Indian food place my wife and I went after moving to Santa Barbara and it is still the only one. The food here is very good and reasonably priced and we don't even consider going anywhere else when we think of Indian food.

Terrible food and service
Reviewer: Peter from Santa Barbara, CA
A quiet Thursday night in Santa Barbara, you'd figure the service would be great when there are almost as many staff as customers. No, you're wrong. The waiter spent the whole time on his cell phone, then sat down to eat. He NEVER came by. Our only service was the very nice busboy, who didn't speak English. The Vindaloo tasted like raw tomato sauce ... I didn't know you could DO that to Vindaloo! We would've asked for help with this, but see previous comment about the absentee waiter. Overall, very disappointing, and I used to consider Flavor of India the best in SB. I won't ever be back.

So delicious, will definitely go back!

My grandparents came into town this week to visit me at school and wanted to take me out to dinner, which no college student will ever turn down. So we decided Indian and chose Flavor of India. Best decision ever! We didn't have reservations but it was a wednesday night so weekends might be busier. However, the restaurant was almost empty when we got there so we got a seat right away. Our server was great, we asked for suggestions and we gave us lots of information on the food. We ended up ordering Lamb Kormah, Mango Chicken, Bengan Bharta, and veggie Biryani with two orders of Naan to go with it. We had plenty of food between the three of us and we odered family style, meaning we all shared. Everything was delicious, we got a mild spice which is perfect. If you do like some heat to your food then go with the medium spice. The service was wonderful, prices were fair and order a Mango Lassi to go with it all (it's a mango/yogurt drink that's like desert). I will for sure go back!

Best indian buffet I ever went to!

Last week I went there with my best friend and it has delicious. I had Chicken Tika Masala and it was so flavorfull and almost sweet in a satisfying way. The mint chutney was vary spicy but it went perfectly with the delicious optional garlic Naan. I had a Mango Lassi and it was sweet and good. For dessert I had rice pudding, they used the regular rice, counut milk, and a little cinnamon and cardamom. I love the Indian decor and the restaurant was cool and comfortable.

Strayed from Spice
Reviewer: Charlotte from Goleta
I was in the San Roque area the other day and smelled the intoxicating aroma of Indian food. I decided to stray from Spice and give Flavor shot..and I'm glad I did! The buffet was fabulous! Not as good as Spice but quite good indeed. The garlic naan was the best I've had! The relaxing and civilized environment, very attentive service was appreciated. The service at Spice sucks! I had a nice, cold glass of Meridian Chardonney for $5.00 ( generous pour too..imagine that!) I sat there for an 1 1/2 hours with continued great service. That's my new lunch spot on my day off!!! I wish they'd make the thin, crispy potatoes they have at the Spice buffet!

Excellent service

Consistently good!

I just dined here after not having been for several months and was again reminded of how much I love this place! Very friendly service from three different staff members whom were making sure I had everything I needed and was happy. I am surprised at the previous comment about the food - I think it is flavorful and well balanced. Perhaps you are used to a different type of Indian cooking? As with most countries, Indian food has regional cooking which can vary greatly from one place to the next.

Worst Indian Restaurant Buffet Ever
Reviewer: Edward Weinberg from Barstow, CA
Do you want to experience the most meager Indian lunch buffet ever? This is your place. You had better like chicken. Here is what they had: tandoori chicken, masala chicken, spinach dish, potato/cauliflower, chickpea dish, and rice. If I hadn't made an appt. to meet their, I would have walked out. How stupid do you have to be to come back a second time for this worst selection of Indian food ever? The rice pudding? The worst ever!! No raisins, no nothing, but rice? Plus it was insipid. These people have the SB people bamboozled. Are you a bunch of morons? I rate my dining experience here as a big fat ZERO.

Nothing bad to say
Reviewer: Stu from Santa Barbara, CA
The food is good and the people are nice. One very nice thing was when two staff members each offered me another Naan bread even tho the one I had was only half eaten. Lunch buffet is small but tasty. I have never tried cooked to order dishes here. The ambiance is not as nice as the other Indian restaurents further down State Street. This place has the rep among many of being the Best Indian food in town and I just don't agree. Would I come here again? Yes, but its not my first choice.

Neighborhood standby but could be more consistent!

This place is a perfect neighborhood takeout joint, especially now BevMo is right next door. The restaurant is so-so, not a lot of ambience and if I am going out to eat Indian food I usually go to Spice Avenue, which I find more authentic. Nonetheless, Flavor of India has great phone-in service, they never get my order wrong and the food is fresh and interesting. The Navratan Korma is a good way to end a long day, great comfort food and each portion is easily enough for two. Their nan can be a bit soggy, but other staples (samosas, bajis) are good and the portions are huge. Only one gripe, which is that despite the fact that I am always asked whether I want the dishes mild, medium or spicy, my order varies wildly in what "spicy" means. Most American versions of Indian food are too mild for me, so I always ask for "spicy" but sometimes it is very mild, and sometimes it is off-the-charts hot. Aside from that, I have it on speed dial.
