Delicious food, very slow service, 7/24/2010
Reviewer: Sam from Santa Barbara, CA
The sushi at Shintori is probably the best in SB, but avoid this place during peak hours (630-830 pm). It's extremely hard to get a seat, and the past two times i've gone, I had to wait well over an hour to recieve my rolls. This place is best for take-out sushi, as everytime I order take out, it's ALWAYS ready in 20 minutes. They just need to prioritize orders, and i'd give them 5 stars for service

stick with sushi, 3/9/2010

i had the beef bowl the japanese waitress misunderstood and brought a beef ROLL. So after waiting the beef bowl was brought. The beef was chewy and I think they use liquid smoke as it had a pungent fake smoke taste. I'd stick with sushi

my personal favorite, 2/27/2010

i would definitely refer this place to a friend. its extremely well made. they have a variety of sushi rolls and other japanese dishes. me and my mom go there all the time. i'm going right now with my boyfriend. yummy. its a way to feed your body in a healthy manner and not feel guilt afterwards. leaving you completely satisfied. seriously pick any roll and youll fall in love i never get the same thing twice. that would be a waste of an experience.

Great Stuff!, 10/12/2009

Hard to beat this place, have not had better in Santa Barbara area. More of a hole in the wall place with limited seating but a long sushi bar. Park at the CVS, limited parking. Lunch meal was a great deal and inexpensive for what you get. They go out of the way with giving you little food and sauce extras I have not seen at other places in SB(I've not tried all the places but most) and the portions were good. Not really a "fine dining" experience but the waitresses are really nice and friendly and the decor is cool.

Holy Moly they feed you alot. Really nice!, 10/10/2009

OK, this is the more typical Sushi joint. Festive, but lacking the 'pick-up joint energy of Arigato. What you get is HUGE portions. Fresh fish, nicely prepared (not the artistry of Arigato or Sakana, but excellent. Huge array of roles, make sure to tell them if you like things spicier, they tend to go pretty mild on everything. Lacking some of the specialties of a top-drawer place, but this is a solid establishment that will have you back. Nice service, attentive and friendly. Pricing is probably most reasonable in town for a sit-down date night sushi meal.

Great Rolls if the waitress turns in your order!!
Reviewer: Cass from Santa Barbara, CA
We have tried this place twice and each time the MANY rolls have tasted fresh and yummy! Both times we went in early before the crowd and seems like orders were not made in order of entry. 2nd time, We were still waiting after the crowd came and went and the "cooks" were standing waiting for something to make when they noticed us staring at them, they asked the waitress and she pulled it out of her pocket when she had told us eariler she turned it in. No apologies, no nothing.. Will have to think twice before giving it another try.

Favorite New Sushi Spot
Reviewer: Joe from Santa Barbara, CA
Avoided this place for awhile because it looked downright too festive. After hearing from a friend how good it actually was, I had to try it. I wasn't disappointed. Even though I had way more sake than sushi, I can still say the food was delicious. We went back the next week and decided to cool it on the sake bombs and sure enough, sushi was still good! Will definitely be back. Only gripe is some offensive writing on the lamps written by some immature diners. Kids will be kids.

aimed to please!

I just can't get enough of this place! I usually order take out weekly but today I decided to dine in with my friend to fully enjoy the authentic ambiance that this Japanese restaurant has to offer. We were really pleased with the 10% discount we received on our bill due with the promotion that is being to customers as a result of last week's fire. I really appreciate what this place has to offer in terms of great service, fantastic food, and the very warm and sincere vibe I get every time I go!

THE BEST ALL-AROUND JAPANESE RESTAURANT in SB!!!
Reviewer: George from Santa Barbara, CA
I have been there twice now. The ambiance is 100% Japanese.... no American influence or junk. If you want Japanese, this is the place to get it. To answer other reviews, yes the service is slow. HOWEVER, I understand and sympathize because the restaurant is small and there's flocks of people who choose take out while I eat there. The chefs have been there for ten years plus. All are experienced and are very picky on putting the right ingredients. The Japanese waiters are cute; however they have a hard time comprehending, which is fine. In my opinion, there aren't many good Asian restaurants as all have been commercialized. Having this be only Japanese, I would say they are monopolizing the Asian restaurants in Santa Barbara. GREAT PRICE – please remember that because Arigato and Piranha are ridiculous. If you are going there for the first time, be sure to sit right in front of the chefs as they make the food in front of you – NO JOKE! They always change up their menus, but I recommend choosing from the many affordable specials they put on the wall. PS: this is also an amazing place for a date! ;)

Best sushi and Best customer service!!!
Reviewer: Meghan from Santa Barbara, CA
I order take-out from Shintori a few times a week and every time it is amazing!!! They are sooo nice and they always tell me it will be about 15 mins or so, but even when I go early it always seems to be ready right when I walk in! The servers are so sweet and they always give me free edamame! The price is cheap for the large rolls you get! yummmmmmm:)

Sushi has to be FRESH in Order to be Sushi
Reviewer: Huyen from Santa Barbara, CA
After returning from a wild Halloween weekend in Hollywood and 2 days of barely edible food, I was craving high quality SB Sushi, and Shintori did not dissapoint. We arrived shortly before 6 on Sunday evening and from then on it was at capacity. Started out with complimentary edamame (does anyone else do this?), and chowed down on my usual Philly Roll, their new menu item - tempura tuna and jalepeno roll, and the mighty Little Osakaaa...2 rolls in one with salmon & eel..divinnnee. My boyfriend had a huge combo platter complete with teriyaki chichen, fried shrimp & veggies, salad, rice, fruit and a cali roll. Spicy tuna roll on the side..lol. Now that's a meal. I loved the food presentation, and the funky cool ambiance of the restaurant. They had some crazy techno video game horror music playing and it caused a few giggles and laughs amongst diners..a fun experience. I do love home!! Plus a large beer and hot sake totaled our bill at $70..not bad! Oh, I always have to have extra spicy sauce, most places are skimpy with it or charge..here they hooked it up in a large dish along with a spicy smiley face :) The waitresses were super sweet and efficient. Cheers and HAPPY VOTING!!!

Constant quality

I have been coming here for a few years, since I first discovered it hidden away in its little upper-State St. nook! The food is always great (try the spicy tuna roll and the dream roll) and the staff is friendly. I also like how they bring you a bowl of edamame before your meal and then a plate of fruit after! The cheerful waitresses and chefs always wave goodbye when you leave, and the satisfaction in my mouth and stomach always keeps me coming back!
