Great simple food, TV a little annoying., 11/7/2009
Reviewer: Nancy from Santa Barbara, CA
I eat here often and not because they have fantastic food, but because the food is good and reliable. The salad bar is great. They have fabulous homemade ranch dressing, for dressing enthusiasts. Their wings are great as well. Nothing fancy, but good solid food and not very expensive. Staff is friendly but I've found I need to often approach them to order, get the bill, be seated, etc., because I'd wait forever otherwise. But they're friendly when I approach them so that works for me. The TV is ALWAYS on sports channels which can be annoying.

Don't waste your time here!!

After being seated immediately, we sat for nearly 10 minues before being greeted by any employee. I was given a setup that had, what appeared to be, bloody nose feces on the napkin surrounding the knife and fork. It was disgusting! I immediately went to the rest room where I found the area to be in need of being cleaned. After washing my hands I did not find any paper towels in the dispenser. I informed a staff member (waitress) of the problem. The crab cake we ordered was cold and had to be sent back to be reheated. Upon ordering our entree, we both ordered a salad which was NEVER delivered to our table. The Linguini and Clams was mediocre at best. The clams were the size of a dime and that is being generous! However, my GF's salmon was pretty good. The staff also cleaned the salad bar (which was right next to our table) before we were finished eating. This was loud and unprofessional in my opinion. By the way, we ordered an ala-carte salad and not a salad bar. When I advised the waitress of the no salad situation, she simply said "Oh really?" She did not offer to fix anything. Finally when we left we both used the rest rooms. This was approximately 1 hour after my first visit. The towel dispenser had not been visited and was still empty. Like I said...DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR $$ IN THIS PLACE!!

Good food, hit and miss service
Reviewer: Andrea from Santa Barbara, CA
State and A is convenient to the Arlington and Granada and there is plenty of parking in vicinity. The food has always been consistently tasty and well prepared though the service can either be great or lacking. I've had a waitress who hustled and got my husband and I out in time for a show. I've also had a waiter who, in a nearly empty restaurant, had to be flagged down to order 15mins after being seated. I recommend it for the food but realize you may or may not be pleased with service.

I LOVE IT

I recently came to santa barbara to attend the university and happened to find this place with my mom while visiting state street. Since then, I take all my visitors there, it is very affordable and every meal I have ordered is very delicious. Havent tried the salad bar yet though. It has a nice vibe, relaxing and pretty casual. I would definately recommend to any of my friends or family.

Imagine my surprise
Reviewer: David from Santa Barbara, CA
When a resdtaurant down the street was full, my friends decided to nab a table here. I yelled into my phone trying to stop them while I was finding a parking spot but it was too late. The first thing that happened was a waiter came out and asked us to move because a band was setting up on our spot. Was this band a surprise? Did the band fairy come to visit them? I am guessing State & A knew about the band coming on in 15 minutes and still sat us there. The rest of the night was a bit of a surprise. The fish and chips I ordered were actually pretty good. I wanted some BBQ sauce for my friesd and it came out warm and tasted homemade (?!?). The fish was good too. And the server (this time a girl), was super friendly. I was shocked.

FANTASTIC!!

Worst Dining Experience Ever
Reviewer: Nicole from Santa Barbara, CA
I eat out often and have been to more restaurants in SB/Goleta than I'd like to admit. Because of this I have had great experiences and terrible ones, but nothing tops this place. I saw a movie last night at the Arlington that got out at 9:30pm. My boyfriend and I walked past State & A bar and grill and looked at the menu. We asked a waitress if the kitchen was still open. She assured us it was. We sat down and as soon as we sat down we were asked what we wanted. Being new customers we asked for a minute. That was the last time we saw anyone. We sat in a booth in front of a TV. The bartender, afer about 5 minutes, shut the TV off. I was a little surprised but was even more shocked when he yelled at me from the bar "DID YOU WANT THAT ON??" I smiled and said "no, that's ok." He again yelled at my boyfriend "DID YOU WANT THAT ON??" How rude! I was getting impatient but I know what its like to be near the end of your shift (I was a server for many years) so I waited. Two young men sat in the booth directly behind us. A young waitress went up to them and started having a conversation w/them about their mutual friends etc. Then she served them free chicken quesadilla she had boxed up for herself. We had been there about 10 minutes already and walked out. Oh, and I just went on their website to contact the manager, the "Contact Us" page is blank. Figures.

One of the last good deals on State Street
Reviewer: Joe from Santa Barbara, CA
This restaurant has been around forever (more than 20 years) and it is in an upswing. It feels like a new place and it has gone to the top of my list for casual dining on State. When you add the fact that it has an outdoor patio to enjoy our weather to the great prices, I cannot believe you can walk in and get a seat almost anytime.
