My Girlfriend and I Love This Restaurant..., 8/15/2012

I take my girlfriend to Chucks whether we are in the mood for steaks or seafood. Both of us have tried both, and usually share no matter what we are in the mood for. The salad bar is fully stocked with fresh bread that we love, and my girlfriend loves to eat plenty of salad with each meal, so this place rocks in all areas. The service is usually good, they have their busy times, but if they are busy we just expect it to take a little longer than usual, although we've never had any problems with the service. We especially love the ambiance of this place... dark, intimate and romantic. Where else can you go to get all this? Jumbo prawns, scallops, king crab legs, lobster and a variety of steaks, all the salad you can eat, and a feeling of romance every time you go. I guess that sums up why it's my girlfriends and my favorite place to go together - good food, fine wine, good people.

Best Seafood and Steaks, 8/13/2012
Reviewer: Elyse from San Francisco, CA
My husband and I love to dine at Chucks when we come to Santa Barbara, as it is among our top favorites, like sushi. We'll have steak at Chucks one night and sushi another night, and then we're both happy. The steaks are as tender and juicy as they can be, more tender and juicier than anywhere else we've had steak, so we usually dedicate at least one night to hanging at Chucks. They have a superb wine list, as well, which only adds to our enjoyment, along with excellent service, we would have to say that Chuck's of Hawaii on State Street is one of the most consistent restaurants in food and service that we know... which is why we keep coming back!

Used to be better, 6/18/2012

We have been to Chuck's La Cumbre occasionally over the years. It used to be my favorite place. I like the dark atmosphere. Anyway here are my observations: I believe the quality of the meat is not as good as it used to be. The waiter we had last time lacked soul. He went through the motions, but is was not genuine. Just doin' his job. Thirdly, they kept asking if they could take my plate. We had not been there very long and don't linger, but it was not right to basically ask us to leave. Like so many things now days, it felt like it was all about the money, not the experience. I must say, lately my observation: Does anybody care about anything except money and BMW's and driving fast? Santa Barbara used to be slower, more caring, more personal. Sadly I feel like that has been lost. Money, money, money.

Great service!

Good Food and Service

Steak was some of the best I've ever had. Prawns great too. Salad bar, voted best in SB, was Ok. Its nice that you get a trip to the salad bar as part of your order. Nothing too spectacular over for instance a Sizzler salad bar though the stuff was fresh, the side bread was a bit crusty and not too fresh. The service was good(a little too eager to want to clear table while eating though...). Ambience was dark, I guess for a romantic feel? Overall a good place to try and steak highly recommended.

Who's running this place
Reviewer: Josh Bradley from Santa Barbara, CA
We have been a long-time customer at Chuck's for over 15 years, we have officially ended our visits to this local establishment. After being customers on a weekly basis we can no longer tolerate the incompetent management who constantly treats customers in a disrespectful manner. We have always put aside the dark dingy feeling of chucks restaurant and enjoyed a reasonably priced steak. when we received our check we had been charged for beverages that we obviously did not have after speaking with the manager he refused to remove them from our check.

Would you like red wine on YOUR SHIRT with that steak?
Reviewer: Susan from Santa Barbara, CA
I went here on the invitation of a friend. It was some special deal on the weeks menu so it was packed. Atmosphere: dark, dank. If you ever wondered where white middle aged men in Hawain shirts and baseball caps hang out, this is it. Food: Dinner was basic, steak had no flavor.. did they forget to put salt or pepper on it? Rice is Uncle Bens with soysauce. Salad bar basic with lots of gloopy dressing. Service: But the real kick in the pants came when we heard a crash at the table next to us (the waiter dropped a glass or two of drinks) and one of my friends jumped from his seat and said, 'something is wet on my back.' He turned around and his entire back of his shirt was splashed with red wine. We showed the waiter who served both tables and he did NOTHING. I was shocked... I told my friend he really needs to offer to pay for your dry cleaning bill. We had to ask for soda water and then remind them NOT TO CHARGE US FOR the soda water because it was to clean the stained shirt. Come on.

Bar tender sucked big time!!!
Reviewer: Nikki from Santa Barbara, CA
I live close by chucks and I've been going there for about 20 years but the bar tender sucks! We had to go to him for more drinks. He never asked us if we wanted anything. I'd rather go to marmalade cafe which has better service but weaker drinks. At least they ask us how everything is.

Good food

What's up with this...
Reviewer: Kris from Santa Barbara, CA
Had dinner here tonight...great service, great food. Had a New York steak, medium, prepared great. Wine list is off the charts, people are nice, and the place has been around since I graduated Santa Barbara High School in the late Sixties. Old school run by great young people!

Disappointed first-timer
Reviewer: Sean from Santa Barbara, CA
We're new in town and I'd heard a thing or two about Chuck's, so we decided to try it out. It was a Tuesday night and we arrived without a reservation. We were seated promptly enough but it went downhill from there. The server walked right past us five times over the course of about 15 minutes before even coming to ask what we wanted to drink. When the food came, one person's meal came a few minutes later than anyone else's and then had to be sent back not just once but TWICE because they couldn't figure out that a "medium" steak shouldn't be deep red throughout. When a manager came over, he acted as though we'd done them some disservice by asking for a steak to be cooked as ordered. I'll give them this much: the salad bar is pretty good. Sadly, I won't be back to enjoy it again, as it wasn't worth the rest of what we had to endure.

Great Dinner
Reviewer: Tina from Carpinteria
Ate at Chuck's on Friday night for the first time and the food and the service were great. Steak was huge and delicious but couldn't finish it after that salad bar and the delicious bread! Only thing is I would have preferred a baked potato to rice with my steak. I wasn't given a choice but my friend did say you just have to ask. Would definitely go again.
