January 2014 Get Away, 6/21/2014
Reviewer: Dana from Seattle
On a personal retreat in January, I stopped here for lunch following a city tour. Patio seating with wonderful view. Maybe it was my mood and the magic of being in SB in January experiencing incredible weather...whatever...I chose this restaurant for the patio and view as I meandered by. A first visit for me and it did not disappoint in any way. Casual, relaxed, easy. After a 2 hour lunch and a 2-glass nod to Washington winery Chateau Ste. Michelle, I was restored ;-)

I don't think you dined at the Breakwater. Our family loves this iconic spot. I think we are on our 15th year. Larry, John, Krista, Lucy, all the other workers who have been there for a decade or more, You..Rock !...Eggs Bene..!!!

Worst brunch place, 5/18/2014
Reviewer: Rachel from Santa Barbara, CA
One of my worst brunch experiences. Came here on a Sunday morning because friends recommended it, but maybe it's better during the week as opposed to the weekend. First, we waited 20 minutes or so until we had to ask someone to order our food. Second, no one came around to check on us or see if we needed drink refills. We had to ask twice for water refills. Third, my veggie omelet had SO MANY egg shells in it that it was inedible. I couldn't tell someone about it because there were no waiters in sight for the longest time. Fourth - and probably the worst part of all - the entire time we were there, the owner (or manager, not sure) was being so rude and disrespectful to both his staff, and customers. I have never in my life seen an owner be so blatantly rude. He was snapping his fingers at the staff, belittled the hostess in front of multiple customers, and was very selective in how he treated customers. To some of us he was rude, and to others, he would go out of his way to accommodate then (part of him accommodating guests was being disrespectful to his staff, so not great there either). There are many other fabulous breakfast/brunch places in town with better food and service. Unless they improve the service and are better about the quality of food that leaves the kitchen, I will never be back here.

Great place to eat, 2/13/2014

I have been coming to this restaurant off-on now for 17 years. The service has always been great, Krista, Terri and Lucy have always taken good care of me and I have NEVER and a bad meal. The prices are fair so go there.

Great fish & chips, 10/4/2013
Reviewer: Phil from Goleta
I've been coming here for over 40 years for the chowder and fish & chips. I've been to the other trendy fish restaurants, and still prefer the Breakwaters chowder and fish & chips. Only once did I complain about the food, and they took care of it! Never had bad service. Always friendly and fast. I recommend Breakwater for a good dinner without the big bill ! They also allow pets on the patio.

unsanitary conditions

I have visited this establishment a good 4-5 previous times. On the most previous visit I witnessed multiple plates waiting to be delivered to tables stacked on one another. The were full of food. This was on a Sun AM. Extreme food violation due to sanitation. I returned to the restaurant today 6/12/13. Ordered mozzarella sticks, clam strips and NE clam chowder. Mozz sticks arrived first and were cold in the center. Note: 5 pieces in a plate serving. 1.5 pieces tested and returned 3 pieces due to not being cooked properly. Sever took mozzarella back as a complaint. I was re-served the same 3 pieces that were sent back to the kitchen. The Breakwater kitchen staff put the mozzarella sticks taken from the table as a complaint and RE-FRIED THEM IN THE SAME OIL USED FOR ALL NEW ORDERS FOR THE ENTIRE RESTURANT!!!!! HEALTH VIOLATION! DISGUSTING! I refused all other food ordered & only paid for the 1 beer and 1 wine ordered. These folks know nothing about sanitation! & I happen to work in the food/bar industry! Do Not Go Here!!!!!!!

Excellent breakfast!
Reviewer: Carole from Steamboat Springs, CO
Ate breakfast outside and enjoyed the food and the harbor ambience. My Florentine Eggs Benedict were delicious, almost as good as our favorite home town breakfast restaurant which specializes in eggs Benedict. My husband's breakfast was also very good, and the fruit cup was especially nice. The service was a little forgetful, but nothing was too outrageous. Did not love the loud music playing at that early hour.

A wonderful end to our first visit to CA
Reviewer: Grace and Anita from London, Great Britain
We were looking for somewhere to enjoy some local seafood and soak up some final holiday sun rays - so glad we found Breakwater! We sat outside, looking towards the harbor and caught the last of the evening sunshine. Our waitress Susan was a complete star. I've very rarely met anyone as genuinely helpful as her - making sound recommendations on the menu and wine to match (without just picking all the most expensive options!!) The food didn't pretend to be gourmet, and neither did the prices, which was exactly what we wanted. The portions were a good size too - we shared a main to save room for dessert =D When the sun tucked below the horizon they brought over a heater lamp so we could still enjoy the view and fresh air without freezing ourselves... A couple came in with their two young children and were treated very well too, with high chairs brought over and seats moved around without a fuss. Seems like a great place to bring children, but also to celebrate the end of a great holiday with friends or family. If you're looking for somewhere flashy and 'cool', this isn't it. But if you want some great food, fantastic service and not break the bank - I couldn't recommend here more highly. Special thanks again to Susan, our waitress - you really made the experience a memorable one for us.

Do not come here!
Reviewer: Brian from Santa Barbara, CA
I am a commercial fisherman at this harbor and should have known better than to come here having heard horror stories. The 2 of us were served far after a group of 4 that was seated long after us. Food was bad when it finally did arrive. I'm never coming here again and I will make sure people I know don't either.

Horrible coffee
Reviewer: Jonathan from Santa Barbara, CA
Unfortunately Breakwater has some of the worst coffee in SB. I've tried several times, and it is just not drinkable. Way too watery. I can't go there for breakfast anymore because of this. I really hope they stop watering down their coffee

BEST SERVER IN THE WORLD...
Reviewer: JoAnn Schwendtner from Santa Barbara, CA
Krista was our server this morning at the Breakwater Rest. here in S.B. She was the best server I have ever had. I spilled catsup all over my blouse and she proceeded to get what I needed to take the stain out. Now who would have ever done that? I have never had that treatment, ever (in a restaurant) She has been a waitress at that rest. for over 13 years. You are a real jewel Krista. I hope I have that name right. God bless you. I could really tell you enjoy your job. This is called beyond the call of duty. Your care was really appreciated. You are an "angel" 4-sure. Thanks so much.

Excellent sunday lunch place
Reviewer: Jan from Santa Barbara, CA
Breakwater Restaurant is a terrific place to go for weekend lunch. It does not advertise itself as a gourmet place for fine dinning. The food is good, very moderately priced and most of the servers are polite and friendly. We enjoy our weekend fish and chips and clam chowder there and drive up from LA for a lovely Sunday in Santa Barbara. Note: The owners could be a bit more friendly and one or two of the staff are not polite but otherwise we would recommend this place to everyone. Sit outside its gorgeous.
