Reviews by the General Public

overpriced. small portions.
Reviewer: Richard from Santa Barbara, CA
ordered the dr love, which is supposedly "HUGE," but it was only a little taller than a simple cheese n cold-cut sandwich a kid would make. meat was good, but nothing spectacular about the preparation. would probably eat here again in passing--i cant see myself driving to its location specifically to eat there.

Super Fast!
Reviewer: K.G. from Lompoc, CA
I ordered the broccoli cheddar soup and a half george sandwich. the sandwich was kinda small, even for a half but it was really good and the soup was bomb. they brought it out 5 minutes after i ordered.

Excellent deli, ignore the naysayers
Reviewer: Dan Montello from Santa Barbara, CA
I am surprised to see so many negative reviews. I have been eating here for several years, and it is very good deli food. Yes, I have eaten at your precious New York and L.A. delis, and the food here stacks up fine. It was always the best of the Bitterman's around town (now it's the only?). Try the Kramer dog, competitor for best hot dog in town. Try the Palminteri (double meat for extra gluttony), with heated stacked salami and cheese. The service is prompt and genial as well. Ok, you might think you'd landed in the Seinfeld equivalent of the Small World ride at Disney. But hey, take it to go if you must.

Every day, I have a thirty minute break and I choose Bitterman's. Every day the food and service gets better and better. The owner's are the nicest people and it's nice to see a style of food that isn't covered in quacamole and has a different style. Everytime I go I try something new and am never displeased. I love the different varieties of side orders and their all very tasty!

Bad Bad Bad
Reviewer: Alex from Santa Barbara, CA
I tried this place after reading the reviews and was disappointed. The sandwich itself was tiny and the meat in it was thickly sliced. I could only eat half of my pastrami sandwich before getting disgusted. If you want good pastrami try three pickles or norton's.

disappointed.
Reviewer: Chad from Santa Barbara, CA
Upon asking a friend where to get a good sandwich, Bittermans came up so I tried it today and was well..very disappointed. The Pastrami sandwich is the first item listed on the menu and that is exactly what I have been searching for in this town. First they put jalapenos in in it, WRONG. And then there was about 2oz of chewy meat. C'mon..if you going to advertise Seinfeld and the NY mystic..make a sandwich for a MAN not a baby. I opted for the pasta salad as a side, it was pasta soaked/drenched in vinegar...yuck! Perhaps I should try something else..but a truly great pastrami sandwich still eludes me.

Mmmmm...Mmmm...Mmm

I love this place friendly people great food!!! My fav. is the chicken salad sandwich!!!!

Homestyle sandwiches, soups. Good eats don't expect too much
Reviewer: john from Santa Barbara, CA
The first time I ate at Bitterman's I had no idea what to expect. Once I had my first sandwich I realized what it was about. It's homestyle flavor deli sandwiches and not typical west coast flavors. I grew up eating some similar sandwiches and think I know where the influence comes from. Distinctively home style comfort style sandwiches and soups, i like it. Bitterman's sandwiches are tailored and cut for eating, when I think Bitterman's I know exactly what kind of food I'm craving. The soups are good, especially on a cold and wet day. The sandwiches are good and homestyle. The service is generally good and like the fact that Seinfeld is playing on TV all the time. I also like their location and it's usually busy in there during lunch each day.

Vegetarian Delight!
Reviewer: Jeremy from Santa Barbara, CA
I've eaten at Bitterman's a total of 5 times and each time was better than the last. I usually get the vegetarian sandwich with a side of fruit. Parking is very convient (75 min free across the street) and the owners are a lot of fun. Overall, the food is fresh and the atmosphere is enjoyable. SEINFELD!

Not good at all !!!!!
Reviewer: Jacob from Santa Barbara, CA
I have just made the mistake of ordering a turkey dip with the side of potato salad. After I had returned to work with our to-go orders we had noticed the slab of ham-like bologna in the place of where the turkey should of been. Over the phone we had asked for two sides of horse radish which was verbally confirmed by the owner upon pick-up. They mixed our side orders WITH horse radish! Have you ever had potato salad mixed half with horse radish? Our office had ordered soup, a side salad and 2 sandwiches for $30. plus an additional $20.00 to get another meal elsewhere after we threw out all of our Bitterman's. We were going to take our food back but after circling the downtown area for about 20 min. trying to find a parking spot within walking distance to pick up the food the first time,we had figured we had wasted enough time and money on Bitterman's.

Jerry has definitely left the building
Reviewer: Matt from santa barbara, ca
Today I visited this deli for the first time in about a decade. I had the Jerry and it was terrible, it was like a sandwich some kids mom would make from thick-cut pre-packaged oscar meyer lunchmeat on home-pride buttertop wheat bread. The Cole-slaw tasted ok. Must be new owners because this place isn't the same at all. Sorry for such a bad review folks but this place seems to have lost all the original character that once made it an original. The food seems to suffer from cost-cutting measures or they just forgot how to cut lunch-meat for a proper Sammie.

Great variety, all good
Reviewer: Patrick from Santa Barbara, CA
Bitterman's has a huge variety of sandwiches to choose from, and everything I've tried has been good (ranging up to awesome). Most of their sandwiches are the perfect size for a lunch. Filling, but not overwhelming. I generally prefer their hot sandwiches.

#1 JERRY Club Sandwich!!!!
Reviewer: Amelia from Santa Barbara
I've never had a better club sandwich than the Jerry over at Bitterman's Deli. The service, soup & sandwichs and location are great. I love this local spot.

Mmmhhh Bagel Chips
Reviewer: Danny from Santa Barbara
Very good food, great differnt sandwiches, and all are very good. The also sell the deli meats, so you can bring them home. The best thing they have though are their bagel chips they make themselves they are SOooo good.

no way "new york"
Reviewer: marc from new york
i'm glad you santa barbara people think that this is "new york quality", etc. i grew up in new york eating at real delis and this place is a joke! their "skyscraper" sandwich is less than half the amount of meat you'd get from any ny deli and is twice as expensive. the meat is not even that good quality, very fatty. the owners should offer a decent amount of food at a reasonable price. don't waste your time, unless you want to pretend with your other sb friends that you've tried "east coast".

Two thumbs up!
Reviewer: Mike from Santa Barbara, CA
I am a frequent customer to this deli. I come back since the variety is good, sandwiches are always fresh and addictively delicious. It also helps that the owners are very friendly. I highly recommend this place.

Not a deli
Reviewer: Heather from Santa Barbara
I think it would be helpful if they put as much emphasis on the quality of their sandwiches as they have put in the Sinfield memorabilia. I would really love this "deli" to be good, but I agree that Von's has better sandwiches these days. The sandwiches have barely any meat in them and hardly any condiments. I read the story of Bitterman's and I don't know of any deli in New York that would serve this food and stay in business. I wish I could be positive but I have tried Bitterman's many times and am always bitter when I leave. I am a native Santa Barbarian and I won't eat here again even if it's free. Sorry, but get it together! Have you been to Norton's?? That's a sandwich!

My favorite!
Reviewer: Selly from Santa Barbara, CA
I work downtown and have been eating here for years. At first, I was a little thrown off by the unusual service but now it's one of the things that brings me back. The food is always so fresh and the portion size is perfect. I also love how they know you're name when you walk in or they recognize the sound of your voice over the phone. It's the perfect small town sandwich shop.

Great Service, Mediocre food
Reviewer: Megan from Santa Barbara,CA
This a cute place, but a bit overpriced for what you get. The sandwhiches are alright, pretty basic. But they are just like something I would make at home, no special sauce or anything unique. The sides are really small, and a fruit salad is only orange slices with red grapes.

BEST TURKEY CLUB SANDWICH EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reviewer: BRENDA C. from GOLETA,CA
THEY HAVE THE BEST TURKEY CLUB SANDWICHES AND ORDER THE POTATO SALAD AND THE MUST HAVE SIDE DISH, THE FAMOUS BAGEL CHIPS.......YUM YUM JUST THINKING ABOUT IT MAKES MY MOUTH WATER. THE OWNERS ARE REALLY NICE. YOU WONT GO WRONG CHOSING TO EAT HERE. :) P.S. REALLY GOOD TRI-TIP SANDWICH W/DIP TOO!!!!!!

Not the best!!!
Reviewer: Dan G from Santa Barbara
The big problem with Bittermens is that they put very little anything on the sandwiches! The place has so much potential but the owners seem very concerned with the amount of meat used. There are several better "delis" in town,,Cantwells,Ye old..etc

An amazing find!
Reviewer: Maryann from SB
This is the best deli in Santa Barbara by far. Its in the heart of downtown with an awesome new york/seinfeld theme. They have a huge list of sandwiches to choose from, all of which are great. The sandwiches are all given a cute little seinfeld name and come with the most amazing macaroni salad...to die for!! If you have not been to Bitterman's yet, you must try it!

Not great
Reviewer: Marc from Santa Barbara
It just wasn't great. If you want to go for the Seinfeld atmosphere, that's worth your time maybe ONCE. The sandwich sizes were disappointing and the potato salad was too too mustardy--that's all I could taste. I'm not usually a harsh critic, but your $7 or $8 (although not that much) is better spent elsewhere. Even VONS has better sandwiches these days.

A great find!
Reviewer: joanne from Santa Barbara, CA
it's a small deli but with a big list of sandwiches. I am totally in love with this place. It's a perfect place for lunch. The price is reasonable and food is served in a lightening speed. Most importantly, the food is great.

They know my voice
Reviewer: Shannon from Santa Barbara, CA
One of the best Deli's in Santa Barbara. Close comparison to Shaloob's or The Italian Greek Deli (they are 5 star deli's). The atmosphere is fun, the sandwiches taste like they are home made and if you stop by enough the cute little asian lady will remember your order every time!!!

i disagree...

Undoubtedly the best lunch spot in Santa Barbara. Atmosphere is fun, food is delicious, price is reasonable and service is superior to any other place I have been.

I agree......
Reviewer: Spinelli
I went there for matzo ball soup, cause it was the only place in town that I could findthat had it. The soup was good, but I got a half corned beef sandwich with it, which proved to be pretty pathetic. Not enough meat, it didnt look good either and the bread was old.

Who are you people?

I don´t know if I should address those who´ve rated it or the place itself... This is not a deli. End of discussion. Unless of course you consider a fuzzy Seinfeld loop, over the top "NY" memorabilia lining the walls and 2 pieces of thick pastrami a deli. It looked to me like it was trying to be jewish and italian at the same time with a Korean twist. The food was horrible... I mean bad, I had literally run across the street and pay an extra 10 bucks for something to wash it down and out. As for what can be improved, thinner slices, it the menu says hot, well make it hot. Get some corn rye.

A true NY deli

Walking in you are hit with the NYC deli smell of pickles, cold cuts and honey mustard. This atmosphere is definitely that of a New York deli or corner restaurant. This place is the best. Seinfeld episodes play back to back all day, you will eat the most amazing sandwiches, the utlra friendly staff take your order with a smile always and then deliver the food to you at your table in minutes. I have never left without being given a smile and told to "have a good day" from the woman behind the counter. The 159 with honey smoked turkey (ask them to put honey mustard on instead of mayo), the terriki roast beef, and the Amy sandwiches (ask them to add avacado) are probably the closest to heaven you can get wrapped up in a french roll. When asked to choose your side dish (that comes with the sanwich) ask for the potato salad. Just delicious. All in all this place deserves the highest of ratings AND its affordable too. Lunch for two is about $13. I higly recommend this great find.

Long time visitor
Reviewer: Chris from Santa Barbara
Been going to Bittermans since 97-98 and it has never lost it´s appeal to me. The fact just that you can sit down have a good sandwich and watch an episode of seinfeld never really gets old.

Homestyle sandwiches with a Seinfeld flavor.

The place has a cozy atmosphere, the people who run the place are nice koreans and the food isn´t bad. The sandwiches and sides are pretty original tasting with a little eccentricity and Seinfeld is shown on a small tv all day long. The deli is right off of State St. in downtown Santa Barbara. I liked it because of it´s kind of a off-beat place.

ahh no!
Reviewer: Hello Deli from New York
Canter´s, Carnegie, Back Stage, are Deli´s. I´ve have had better at Arco and Chevron then at Bitterman´s. I go for the Seinfeld! For Sandwich´s your better off at "ye old butcher" up the street.

awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reviewer: AJ from Cali
if you´ve not eaten in this place before, get off your couch right now and go there. experience the taste for yourself!

Great place for lunch

I have been a long time customer. The place never fails to lose its appeal on me. The sandwiches are great tasting, service is great, and it carries fun ambience about it.
