They are friendly, I'll give them that. , 2/8/2014
Reviewer: Dyan B. from Goleta, CA
I can't understand how they stay in business. The food ranges from absolutely bland to near-rancid tasting. There's absolutely no interest in making the food anything but fried and made from frozen. If you like stale chicken and pork with corn syrup sauces, then this is the place for you. The only good thing here is the cheese wontons, but even they taste a little "off." The service is very friendly. You feel like they recognize you as a customer when you come in, they smile and they just seem like nice people. Sadly, doesn't make up for the awful food. I can't believe the good reviews, I wonder if people have ever had Chinese food elsewhere!

Modest ambience, food a bit better than average
Reviewer: Tony from LA
Food not as good as some reviews suggested. Physical plant is, uh, unpretentious. First time

Very nice restaurant!

We visit here once a month and always order the same food! Never has a bad meal! We love their yangchou fried rice, string bean tofu and the wor wonton soup! Our family love to go to carpinteria and We always stop by here!

Brown Sauce - On Fish, Veggies
Reviewer: SBMC from Santa Barbara, CA
At least they offer brown rice - $2 extra. It is nice they have fried won ton on the table with mustard & duck sauce. We ordered fish, stir fried veggies and brown rice. All but the rice came sopped in brown sauce. This like the State Street takeout restaurant. Yuck on the brown sauce. A change in cooking style is not likely. I wont' be back.

As Good As It Gets in Carp
Reviewer: William from Carpinteria, CA
My wife and I east there several times per month and the food is always very good and the service excellent. We always order off of the menu and skip the buffet - no particular reason, it's just that over the years we've found our favorites on the menu.

Good Food

I ordered Delivery to a hotel room in Carpinteria and I was looking forward to the Paper Wrapped Chicken that came with the dinner. But when I got it I discovered it was burnt. I called the Restaurant and told them very nicely that I wasn't looking to get any discounts or free food. But that the Paper Wrapped Chicken was burnt. I was told thats the way it's done because it's deep fried. I've had it other places and it's come out nicely. Hardly ever burnt. Also the Hot and Sour soup could've been a little more hot and sour. Still good. The Cashew Chicken was good. But we had a hard time deciding which was the Orange Chick and the Sweet and Sour pork.

Great Food, Ok Service
Reviewer: Glenn from Buellton
Food here is amazing and is probably the best Chinese I have had in SB area that I can remember. Prices are great too. The service was just Ok as it took awhile to be seated and there was just one waittress and an over eager busboy who took plates too soon(I guess because they are so popular?). Also the kitchen is too close to the eating area so you get the sounds of the kitchen while eating. Maybe best for takeout?

So good, So Fast
Reviewer: Lynn waterfield from Carpinteria/CA
Just moved to Carpinteria from Santa Maria and gave U.C a try last week. They told me ten minutes for my three item order and it was there when I arrived. Great food and friendly service!

Good, solid Chinese restaurant
Reviewer: Jack Green from Carpinteria
Uncle Chen's is family owned and operated. This keeps the quality high and consistent. There is a difference between cooks, though, but I haven't figured out whom I like best. It's like one cook puts a bit more flavor into the food than the others.

Yes good for locals and visitors
Reviewer: Robert Ealee from Carpinteria
The place would be better sutied in a more decorative environment with more atmosphere from the Chinese culture. The buffett is the best in SB County (note to Ventura Man: Carpinteria is NOT in Ventura!) The soups are very smooth and made from scratch as is all the other dishes, but soup is A+. I always ask for the Chef's Special - some things not on the menu - but more traditional - and mostly good. And, if you like just straight ahead Chinese food - stick with the set menu and order by letter. Also, Uncle Chen's doesn't decide if you are a local Carpinterian or not - Mr. Motel 6...you must earn it!
