Good Food, 4/26/2009

I ordered Delivery to a hotel room in Carpinteria and I was looking forward to the Paper Wrapped Chicken that came with the dinner. But when I got it I discovered it was burnt. I called the Restaurant and told them very nicely that I wasn't looking to get any discounts or free food. But that the Paper Wrapped Chicken was burnt. I was told thats the way it's done because it's deep fried. I've had it other places and it's come out nicely. Hardly ever burnt. Also the Hot and Sour soup could've been a little more hot and sour. Still good. The Cashew Chicken was good. But we had a hard time deciding which was the Orange Chick and the Sweet and Sour pork.

Great Food, Ok Service, 4/8/2009

Food here is amazing and is probably the best Chinese I have had in SB area that I can remember. Prices are great too. The service was just Ok as it took awhile to be seated and there was just one waittress and an over eager busboy who took plates too soon(I guess because they are so popular?). Also the kitchen is too close to the eating area so you get the sounds of the kitchen while eating. Maybe best for takeout?

Just moved to Carpinteria from Santa Maria and gave U.C a try last week. They told me ten minutes for my three item order and it was there when I arrived. Great food and friendly service!

Good, solid Chinese restaurant

Uncle Chen's is family owned and operated. This keeps the quality high and consistent. There is a difference between cooks, though, but I haven't figured out whom I like best. It's like one cook puts a bit more flavor into the food than the others.

Yes good for locals and visitors

The place would be better sutied in a more decorative environment with more atmosphere from the Chinese culture. The buffett is the best in SB County (note to Ventura Man: Carpinteria is NOT in Ventura!) The soups are very smooth and made from scratch as is all the other dishes, but soup is A+. I always ask for the Chef's Special - some things not on the menu - but more traditional - and mostly good. And, if you like just straight ahead Chinese food - stick with the set menu and order by letter. Also, Uncle Chen's doesn't decide if you are a local Carpinterian or not - Mr. Motel 6...you must earn it!
