NEW SI CHUAN GARDEN OPENS ON DE LA VINA

Yen Ching restaurant at 2840 De la Vina Street closed on January 29th. Readers Annie and Dianne tell me that the replacement Chinese restaurant, New Si Chuan Garden, has now opened and has a “Grand Opening” banner outside.

    Here is the menu. The food looks promising, not the typical Americanized Chinese food.

    Stopped by for lunch. The food was pretty good. The interior has been totally renovated and looks very clean and nice. Only bummer is right now they have no dedicated lunch menu, so you’re stuck ordering what is effectively a full-price dinner entree for lunch. The portion is sizable for the price though.

    Also, the name on the sign and menu is spelled “New Si Chuan Garden” (although right under that on the menu it says they offer “Szechuan” cuisine).

    I wish we had the old fashioned restaurants such as “Fresh choice” which was a buffet on
    the 700 block of State st. Then many years ago we had a place that was cafeteria style.
    It was called The copper Coffee Pot. It was really wonderful, food was out of sight!! and
    of course cheap. It was on the corner of Figueroa and State streets. The one I really loved
    was called “The Country Kitchen” which was on the 1000 block of State st. the whole complex
    burned down many years ago and now there are only offices. I wish Santa Barbara would
    bring back these wonderful type of restaurants. Not the weirdo types today with strange
    breads and raw fish! ugh!

      The economics of rent and other overhead don’t work for that type of restaurant.

      I highly doubt Si Chuan Garden serves raw fish, but you should give it a try if you ever end up in a restaurant that does serve it!
      Start with a place that caters to waipipo like Miso Hungry or a poke place (lots of sauce and rice and veggies) and work your way up (sideways?) to a place that lets you really appreciate the quality of the fish.

      Copper Coffee Pot. ++++!
