RESTAURANT CLOSINGS

In a potentially great sign for the local culinary economy, I am happy to report that there have been no South Coast restaurant closures (that I know of) in the last 3 months. In the 8 years that I have been keeping dining statistics this is the first time we have gone more than a single month without a closure, so suddenly passing the 3 month mark is amazing. Here is a list of local restaurants that have closed in the last year:

    Kingfish in Solvang just closed.

  2. VetteGuy says:

What about the closure of Emilio’s on Cabrillo? Not sure what month that actually occurred….

  3. John Dickson says:

Emilio’s closed in April, 2012. My opening/closing stats do not cover Buellton or Solvang.

  4. Cris says:

John, I think when you announced La Carreta had closed you had said something was quickly going to replace it. Have you heard anything more?

    • John Dickson says:

Yes, I was told that a new eating place would be there within a week after closure then nothing happened at all and no word yet on anyone interested in the space.

  5. Firme Vato says:

What about the new Mongolian bbq place that replaced New
China in Old Town. They went out of business last month. It’s now a
Mexican restaurant “La Tapatia 3″ No love for G Town John?

  6. Liz says:

New China on Hollister in Old Town Goleta closed in June.

  7. Glenn says:

I wonder if there is a pattern there, more tourists in the summer = busy time for restaurants. I think the exception is IV where summer is sometimes not the best place to open as hardly any students.

  8. Charlotte says:

The space where La Carreta and the Asian “massage” place is finally being gutted. Perhaps a new business will take over both spaces. Hopefully a fabulous new diner is my big wish.

  9. Eric says:

Not sure if I missed it, but what’s the story about all the construction on the former Jack’s bagels at La Cumbre?
