QUESTION OF THE DAY

See if you can help reader Karen find buckwheat pancakes at a local restaurant:

Hi John,

My husband is in search of buckwheat pancakes (not crepes) in Santa Barbara or Goleta.  Any ideas?  He had them on a bike trip in northern California, and loved them!!

Thanks!

Certainly not the same as a restaurant that serves them, but the buckwheat pancake mix at Fresh and Easy is delicious!

Summerland Beach Cafe, also Pacific Crepes has Breton-style buckwheat crepes.

Blinis are easy to make at home, however, there is yeast involved, so you must let the batter rest for about an hour. Buckwheat flour is at any health food store ( in the bins ). Serve as you wish but I highly recommend a dollop of creme fraiche, a bit of caviar and or gravlox…a glass or two of ice cold vodka or Aquavit…..Skoal

Karen, thanks for the question. I too love buckwheat pancakes and wondered why they aren’t on more breakfast menus. The last time I had them was years ago at a breakfast restaurant in Carmel. Someone gave me a mix for Christmas but it just isn’t the same. And crepes are not fullfilling subsitute. Keeping my fingers crossed for a good suggestion.
