Last week I wrote that Eureka Burger might be coming to Paseo Nuevo in the old Ruby’s Diner location next to California Pizza Kitchen. Thankfully it appears that I won’t be receiving a public beating for making that prediction. Reliable sources have confirmed that it is true: Eureka is on their way.

Good work John, as usual. Looking forward to this place.
You should check out some of the reviews of this place, it sounds absolutely terrible as far as burgers go.
SL what burger places do you like here in SB? Particularly downtown SB? I randomly stumbled upon a Eureka Burger on a roadtrip last spring, I had such a good experience there I went out of my way to stop in there two more times since. For burger and beer lovers, this place is great, not quite Umami Burger but it is better than Holsteins in the Cosmo in Vegas. The old Rubys place has been closed for a long time, I look forward to seeing Eureka open there, aside from Burgers they will have the best beer selection in SB. Can’t wait!
My favorite burger is SB county is actually up in Los Alamos at the Quackenbush Cafe. It’s a damn good burger. As far as in SB proper Arts and Letters, Hungry Cat, Paradise Cafe, and The Boathouse all have pretty tasty burgers. Art’s and Letters gets bonus points for using Rancho San Julian beef from just up the road.
Absolutely correct SL. And to top that, If you want a beer and a bacon cheeseburger, be prepared to spend over $20. Not so good gourmet burgers.
Milo what place serves this need in SB? BrewCo? I am looking for a good burger/beer spot?
Hmm… on yelp for 2 of their locations they get 4 our of 5 stars with over 200 reviews combined… Where are you seeing the bad reviews?
They got SCATHING reviews from the Burger gurus @ Burger Review (fabulous website by the way!) the menu sounds spectacular but that’s it!
Well- I personally am willing to give them a chance to come to town and let the public decide! I can hardly wait to try the LOMA LINDA!
It looks to be a crap version of Umami Burger.
SL why don’t you open up Umami or something better then? Until then we have the Habit and fast food places for burgers, which do not serve the same segment as Eureka will…Name some better burger places in town…
Arts and Letters, Hungry Cat, Paradise Cafe, and The Boathouse are all putting out some quite tasty burgers.
All these burgers are over $12, I think the Hungry Cat is even like $15!
The burgers at Eureka which this thread is about are for the most part are $10+.
Actually most are less than $10. Only 3 out of like 10 are more than $10.
I think you are mixed up only 3 out of 12 burgers are under 10 bucks. Straight from the menu:
The Original Eureka!Burger™
Served with iceburg lettuce, pickle, thinly sliced Bermuda onions, tomato, and special sauce. 8.95
Jalapeno Egg Burger
Fried egg with melted cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, spicy chipotle sauce, garnished with jalapeno peppers. 10.95
Catalina Bison Burger

Cowboy Burger

LULU Burger

red onion and sweet mint aioli. 11.75
Fig Marmalade Burger
Homemade fig marmalade, melted goat cheese, crispy bacon, garnished with minced tomato, onion and arugula dolloped in a spicy
porter mustard. 10.75
Tortilla Burger
Tomato, onion, pickled jalapeño chips, homemade guacamole, cilantro, monterey jack cheese, spicy chipotle sauce,
wrapped in a grilled flour tortilla. 9.95
Italian Caprese Burger
Buffalo mozzarella, tomato and basil drizzled with a balsamic vinegar syrup. 10.25
Oktoberfest Burger
Charbroiled open-filet polish sausage, sweet onion marmalade, American cheese and a spicy “Oktoberfest” porter mustard sauce. 13.50
Pearl Street Blues Burger
Melted blue cheese, herb sautéed wild mushrooms, grilled onions and a chipotle ketchup. 10.25
Turkey Cobb Burger
Served with crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, blue cheese, and a spicy porter mustard sauce. 10.75
Loma Linda Veggie Burger
A unique homemade blended red beet patty served with arugula, tomato, Bermuda onion and lemon vinaigrette dressing
garnished with homemade zucchini pickles. 9.95
Well I guess it depends on which menu you look at, if you look at Redlands menu prices, they are lower.
I’ll postpone judgement until I actually taste it, but SB is in need of a gourmet burger place, whether this one fits the bill will remain to be seen. Everybody raves about the Paradise burger, but it’s hit or miss for me, sometimes excellent, often not. I think there’s only a couple burgers on the menu anyway so it doesn’t even fit the bill. For an excellent, albeit simple, classic, cheeseburger The Brewhouse rules. At happy hour you’re out of there with beer and tip for 10 bones.
I agree that the Paradise burger can be hit or miss and it’s overpriced, but it’s a pretty decent burger as far as SB goes. It’s like a well executed backyard burger. Nothing all that memorable, but it is enjoyable.
You might give a try to Cafe Stella and Dargan’s… have had good burgers in both. Actually, my wife is the real burger critic in the family, and she is also partial to Paradise and Brewhouse.
The Cafe Stella one I liked at first but lately it seems to have crossed into meatloaf sandwich territory. Too many additional ingredients added to the patty and not enough sear and crust. A good freshly ground beef patty only needs some salt and pepper and a very hot griddle or grill.
My husband and I have been going into Soho for dinner, even when we don’t have a show. Their new organic menu has a San Julien burger that is quite good!
Believe it or not, Brophy’s has a GREAT burger…………as does the Montecito Cafe………Summerland has some juicy burger places too….:-) Guess everyone has their own taste!!
I didn’t even realize Cito Cafe had a burger (if I’m there for lunch the chicken and fried brie sandwich is hard to pass up) I’ll have to give it a shot. Another spot off the burger radar that has a good one is Zooker’s in Carp. Juicy hand formed sirloin patty cooked simply and properly with no unnecessary foo foo additions.
I have to second that Brophy’s burger recommendation….a fish place no less! They have an outstanding burger!! One half pound of deliciousness!!
just looked at their website and it says Opening November in San Luis Obispo….hmmmmm, AND SB?
if Rancho San Julien is “just up the road”…why not venture out to Jalama Beach- where you can get a cheeseburger AND a coors for under $9.00! The view is FREE!
The Jalama burger is one tasty burger and the location is awesome. I wonder though if I was served the same burger someplace else if it would seem as good, that burger is part of the Jalama experience.
We enjoy the drive to the beach and love the burger there…Jalama Beach Cafe is great too- clean, well staffed and quick on the service….but its NOT the same as being at Jalama Beach obviously. The burger at the Cafe is great and tastes the same, but without the view and the beach air- its NOT the same.
So- while the cafe is great- I pass and wait till we have time to make the drive…from our driveway in Los Olivos- its exactly 1.5 to the kiosk at Jalama- not too shabby!
Can’t beat Jalama Burger!! They also have a great cafe in Lompoc. The food ( my favorite is the gigantic Chili Size w/ their Homemade chili and med. rare char burgers! The staff is actually “sweet”. Another perk is a premium full pour of local Chardonney will only cost you $5.00!!! Nice assortment of draft beers as well. Never a disappointment!! I also have resorted to buying my freshly ground Chuck hand formed 1/3 lb. patties (80:20 ) at Country Meat Market in Goleta. I BBQ my own burgers med. rare, juicy! And cheap compared to restaurant crap shoots!
If you are a serious burger fan which you sound like you are you should try grinding at home. I bought the grinder attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer and it works great. For my burgers I do a blend of brisket, short rib, and sirloin. Fresh ground can’t be beat. Also the guys at Country Meat market as well as Lazy Acres, and I imagine Whole Foods as well will grind any of the cuts for you fresh if you ask.
You’re absolutely right! Useful for sausage making as well. What are your ratios for your hamburger blend?
Eureka is a very unique place. Stumbled upon it in Claremont and this should be a great treat for locals. I hear their entire bar is American with even their rum from Boston or something like that. Very unique but not too expensive. When a server can tell me about whisky flights, pale ales and burgers hard to stay away from a Eureka. Good luck Eureka. I am an early fan of you guys! Hurry upon and get open.
