WILL SB DETHRONE THE KING?

An application has been submitted for today’s Architectural Board of Review meeting in downtown Santa Barbara that proposes replacing Burger King at 3707 State St. with Chick-fil-A restaurant. Chick-fil-A is the nation’s second largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain with more than $3.58 billion in sales in 2010. The eatery has 1,540 locations in 39 states. Many thanks to reader Peter who sent me a copy of today’s ARB agenda:

Concept Review – New Item: 3707 State St, Application Number: MST2011-00304, Business Name: Chick-fil-A. Proposal to remodel existing building and convert from Burger King to Chick-fil-A restaurant. Existing drive-thru to remain and outdoor seating with new furniture. Replace existing landscaping, new paint and stucco covering existing brick areas, two new trellises over patio dining areas, ADA upgrades to existing parking spaces. Replace all windows and doors, install three new clerestory windows in kitchen, new exterior lighting, and remove 2 finials.

Chick-Fil-A is one fast food place I will actually eat at. This would be a welcomed upgrade over Burger King’s nasty artificial grill flavored burgers. You eat one of those and you burp fake smoke flavor for hours. Chick-Fil-A is the In-N-Out of chicken sandwiches, tasty food and the employees are well trained and friendly, worst part is they are closed on Sundays.

    • Amanda says:

Oh I know, I hate driving through Oxnard on Sunday’s and thinking about getting some tasty Chick-Fil-A, then realizing that they are closed! :(

    • Ben K says:

I have eaten at Chick-Fil-A it was in a Mall, It is Not the IN-Out Of Chicken Sandwhiches sorry, when I was there the employee brought out the sandwhich and did not even tell me that it was really hot and I burned my tongue on the sandwhich and IN-OUT lets sit for few seconds, so no one gets burned so to me they are not the IN-Out of chicken Sandwich I have been in restaurant industry to me the best is in IN-OUT, Sorry You can not get a Spicy Sandwhich at In-Out if you want a kick you have to ask for a Jalapeño in a bag!

      • SL says:

At In-N-Out you can request chopped chiles on your burger. So yes you can get a spicy sandwich there. As far as getting “burned” by a sandwich and blaming it on an employee, well what can I say, eating is serious business. It’s not Disneyland out there Ben, use caution or the chicken sandwiches may take over and makes us their slaves, they are not to be trusted. Godspeed.

        • Glenn says:

Unless you are at Disneyland when the Columbia falls apart and kills you from a swinging out of control mast or you decide to lift your head on the matterhorn, nowhere is safe anymore!

      • Calvin K says:

Ben K, perhaps it is because you were clumsy enough to burn your mouth like a child would.

      • yiannis says:

please….of course it was hot. it’s supposed to be a HOT sandwich moron. these are some of the best sandwiches around. more for me if you won’t eat there, who cares.

  2. NU says:

I hate having to drive to Oxnard to get Chick-Fil-A! Here’s to saving some money on gas!!

  3. Robert says:

Nice! That BK has been dead for a long time now anyway, good to get some new life in there.

    • Ben says:

I don’t understand why don’t people just eat in, it is more healthy plus you don’t really know what people cook in our food, you can say it breaded but sometimes you can have fried and breaded chicken, I have been in the restaurant business for a while until I got injured so I know that not to many chefs want to let customers in there kitchen, while they are cooking because they don’t want you to know there secret recipes, so in way, McDonalds is unhealthy really yes, they are trying to make it healthy but I would prefer to eat in Red Robbins or Carl’s Junior, they have better burgers and they also have GreenBurrito, People should Just eat in it is way cheaper, I would love to see more restaurants die!!! People Can eat out I am not trying to be mean I just am trying to tell people you can eat better in if you don’t know how to cook than it is your fault for not wanting or learning on how to cook! Plus Restuarants have hard survial rate because they have to manage a lot of things so they can try to make a profit!

      • SL says:

I hear you Ben. In this day and age where you have to have your children’s Halloween candy x-rayed to make sure no razor blades have been inserted into a Snickers bar and then resealed (don’t even get me started on caramel apples) yes going out to eat is literally risking your life. Take these Chick-Fil-A guys for example, did you know they have a cow as a mascot!? This sends a big red flag, maybe what they are serving isn’t even chicken maybe it’s actually beef. They could be doing some method where it’s fried, then breaded, then fried, then stripped of its breading, then fried, then breaded, then fried all to cover up that they aren’t actually using chicken. After your traumatizing experience by being burnt by one of these God forsaken sandwiches I’d say this theory isn’t far off.

  4. Mike says:

Seems that they tried this already on the corner of State and La Cumbre a few years ago. That Chick Fil A lasted maybe a year.

    • Mike says:

That was not a Chick-Fil-A at the corner of State and La Cumbre. That was Koo Koo Roo.

    • Ben says:

I agree with you and I know maybe my comment is harsh if you read it above I am not saying all restaurants should be dead, I just think the unhealthy ones should go away and we should have fresh restuarants that are Health Conscious no should feel pressure but you may eat where you want but I would love to see more healthy eating restuarants coming in and junk food restuarants out! I hope you would agree!

  5. Cow says:

This is the greatest news I’ve heard all year! I hate driving through gangland/Oxnard to get my chicken fix. I’m also stoked they get to keep the drive-through. My wife would always make me leave the BK without ordering because it was too dirty for her. Major upgrade!

  6. Don says:

A good (fast food) chicken place, yippee!

  7. Courtney says:

LOVE chickfila! this would be great news!

  8. pjt says:

i guess santa barbarians don’t hate national chains after all! Yeah Chick-fil-A.

    • Robert says:

Only when its convenient. I’d suspect that since we’re basically trading a national chain for another and its on upper State, far away from the sacred mom & pop mecca that downtown used to be, this won’t get much attention. The NIMBY’s are saving up their anti-national chain bravado for the next vacancy to get filled downtown.

  9. Amanda says:

    I LOOOOOOOOOOVE CHIK-FIL-A!

  10. Scott says:

I can deal with In-n-Out’s bible verses on the bottom of their cups, but the politics of Chick Fil A (specifically the anti-gay stuff) are appalling. Give it a google.

  11. Becca says:

I actually like Burger King. I would rather see Chick-Fil-A go somewhere else!

  12. Brian says:

Chik Fil A is great. They treat their employees very well and close on Sundays. They don’t force the beliefs of their founders on the public or their employees. They work with each community they go into and are actually polite and considerate when you go in. I grew up with Chik Fil A being from the South (Alabama) and it is one fast food restaurant that I plan on stopping at when I travel to LA or Palm Springs. Even my Santa Barbara wife loves Chik Fil A. She’s hooked on the nuggets.

  13. Glenn says:

Where did they get their start? Looks like from the website they put two KFC type biscuits around a fillet, is that what they are famous for? I look forward to trying it, if you really want BK type food live larger and try a Carls.

  14. charlotte klein says:

Yuck!Yuck! and more yuck! What the hell happened KooKooRoo! That was a genius business model! Too good to be true to last? Who knows? Often wondered….what happened.

  15. Magnolia says:

Yeah I remember KOOKOOROO! Home cooking vibe food.

  16. Charlotte says:

As far as I’m concerned, ANYTHING is better than B.K.! Although I wish wish wish for the resurrection of Char West and D.J.’s! a girl can only dream….

  17. Glenn says:

Char West is still on the pier but I’m unsure if its the same owner as the one you are talking about. The burger I had there was good, closest to an old char west burger is probably Habit or Cal Taco. East Beach Grill is the same current Char West owner but burger was not great for me there.

    • Charlotte says:

I’ve tried them all…not the same as the old Char West on State and D.J.’s ( currently Taco Bell across from The Fairview Shopping Center ) Maybe burgers just tasted better in my youth! WAAAA!

  18. Scott says:

Chick-fil-A is amazing. I can’t wait for the Spicy Chicken Biscuits. Now we just need a Steak ‘n Shake.

  19. Tristan Hodges says:

    Chic no pic.
