PADARO BEACH GRILL OPENS TODAY

Brent Reichard, owner of The Habit restaurants and Hook Burger Bistro in Oxnard, gave me a tour yesterday of his newest restaurant: the extensively renovated Padaro Beach Grill at 3765 Santa Claus Ln in Carpinteria.

In addition to being a seaside eatery, Padaro Beach Grill is now an event and wedding destination. Reichard added a large, elevated patio with lava rock fireplace that overlooks the ocean, a stage for live music, an outdoor bar and prep area to cater events, a patio with couches, a double barbecue pit, a huge sand box for kids, a pond, a waterfall and new palm trees throughout the property. The tall hedge on the west side of the property has been trimmed way down to offer a fabulous view of the ocean that previously had been obstructed.

“We want to get the locals back,” said Reichard. “We want to have a place that locals want to come to, and for families. The next thing is to get travelers back and tourists coming up and down the coast. It’s a great place to stop for families. It’s a great place to drive from the Ventura area to come and have lunch. The third thing is events: weddings, corporate events, family reunions, birthday parties, soccer parties, baseball parties and all that. We’ll try having live music on the weekends. The whole emphasis is catering to the locals.”

The menu includes appetizers (quesadilla, nachos, beer boiled shrimp, calamari, the trio), salads (house, bbq chicken, chicken caesar, cobb, shrimp & avocado), burgers (prime burger, hickory burger, maui burger, California burger), sides (fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings, cole slaw, side salad/caesar), sandwiches (grilled chicken, beach club, veggie, tuna melt, fresh fish), fish specialties (fish & chips, fish tacos, mahi mahi wrap, shrimp tacos), kids menu (burger, chicken tenders, grilled cheese, quesadilla), and shakes/malts (vanilla, strawberry, caramel latte, oreo, chocolate fudge).

Hours are Mon-Fri 11am-8:30pm, Sat-Sun 11am-9pm.

Looks great! But I sure do not get the lousy list of bottled beer. How about a little flavor and quality. Maybe some Anchor Steam, Sam Adams, Negra Modelo…

We owned the Padaro Beach Grill 1994-2002, Then it was called the Grill at Padaro. So they are keeping the name we had for it? I should send you photos from when we put in the yard. Glad to see someone can carry on.

Their phone number is listed at (805)566-9800. They are family friendly but not able to accommodate dogs, as much as they would love to.

    • SL says:

Why can’t they accommodate dogs? SB recently allowed dogs on restaurant patios at the restaurant’s discretion. Is because it’s grass? Too many kids vs dog poop? Bummer.

I ate their the other day, it was jam packed and food was good. If you’re annoyed but tons of screaming and energy filled turds it’s not the place for you. If you are a mother with kids who gets to enjoy fun in the sun why your husband works it does appear the place for you. Lots of kids having fun and mother hens squawking.

As far as the food; it’s a glorified Habit. The prices are very reasonable and the food overall is pretty darn good. The burger patties are much better than the usual Habit patties and less cooked into oblivion. The only complaint is the bun, it some sort of brioche and disintegrates as it gets soaked by the burger juices. The sides appear to be the exact same product as they serve at the Habit. They also offer additional items beyond the Habit and Hook standard menu, like fish tacos and fish and chips. They were out of fish for the fish tacos and fish and chips when we went, bummer, but did have the fish for the fish sandwich. I guess they might be using some sort of frozen pre-battered variety for the former.

Overall its leaps and bounds better than what was there before. The place looks great and the food is good enough especially for the prices. The staff was doing well for how long it’s been open and the long line moved quick enough. Despite the huge crowd the food came out in a reasonable time. By the looks of it they have a far far better chance of surviving than the last incarnation that was overpriced and nasty. Thumbs up (except for the no dogs policy! hope that changes!)

We appreciate the comments! First of all, as far as being dog friendly, we decided after much thought that the liability of having dogs and a child friendly atmosphere is too high. Sorry! I know many people would like us to be dog friendly. Our goal though is to provide a comfortable enjoyable atmosphere for all guests and we will be working hard to ensure that with appropriate outside management. As far as the food, it’s actually not at all from the Habit. Our fries are skin on shoestring or waffle cut and the reason we ran out of fish and chips is because we use fresh snapper which we hand dip – it’s not pre frozen – and we have had such a high demand we have run out on a day or two. The fish sandwich is actually a different fresh fish of the day. Our buns are made fresh daily by Ethnic Breads on De La Vina and we offer a ciabatta roll as well. Our patties are USDA Prime chuck and hand formed on site, very different than the Habit. We appreciate all the positive feedback about the improvements we have made inside and out and we are working hard to create an experience enjoyable to all. Hope to see you at Padaro, Brent and Julianna Reichard

Bummer about the dogs, but I understand. The kids we saw sure seemed to be having a good time. That’s awesome that you use fresh fish and hand dip the fish for the fish and chips, so many places in town have dismal version I look forward to trying it. Describing it as a glorified Habit was not meant to be a bad thing as we love the Habit. Glad to see the place back open and run by people that have their act together. Forgot to mention as far as the service we were checked on by the staff a few times during our meal to see if we needed anything which I wouldn’t expect in a casual place like this and it was a welcomed touch. For being only open shortly we expected some service bumps and possible long wait with the crowds, but this did not happen; food came out fast and hot, thumbs up.

My husband and I decided to try out the place on sunday afternoon, Wow, it was great!! We enjoyed drinking our wine sitting up by the fire pit, watching the waves and enjoying the sunset. Best place to be on a sunny afternoon. Food was wonderful also!!! It was very busy but the service was wonderful. I can’t say enough about this place, we will be back very soon!!!

  13. Montecito says:

This is good news! Am happy the PBG reopened. We enjoyed it befre and was sadly disappointed when we heard it had closed. When we vacation again in Montecito, we will surely stop by and try it out. Best of luck to the new owners.

  14. AG says:

I was planing on having my wedding here this summer, but of course since it went under was unable to do so. Am so excited the place has reopened and it looks amazing! Any updates on contact info? The listed phone number doesn’t work and no website yet. Would love to talk to someone about events.

  15. KB says:

The photos look great & I am looking forward to bringing the family back. Thank you for not allowing dogs. I know dog owners love their pets like family, but my children are young & my son is a little afraid of dogs. So for us, a place that allows dogs would not be a place for us. Have some friends out for a visit next weekend, might bring the whole gang down for lunch.

  16. Arthur odel says:

What happened to the pizza ? You guys need to keep the pizza

  17. Susan French says:

Has the fire pit been repaired.? Love this restaurant…and love. the no dog policy….kids and unfamiliar canines…..no bueno .!!!!
