OFF TOPIC

Today, the 30th anniversary of the space shuttle program’s first flight, NASA announced that the retired Endeavor space shuttle will be going to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. This means that Santa Barbara students are going to have some terrific space-related field trips in the near future.

Years ago I took a field trip with Fred Marschak’s class at Santa Barbara City College to Palmdale, CA, where we watched the then-brand-new space shuttle Discovery being built. I took the pictures below during that field trip using a long-forgotten photography system known as “film.” Discovery will be on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Virginia.
