Today Apple announced the iPad 2. Steve Jobs did the demonstration. Here is a summary of what’s new:

  • The iPad 2 ships March 11, 2011
  • Same price as iPad 1, starting at $499
  • Comes with new version of operating system: iOS 4.3
  • 65,000 apps available specifically designed for iPad
  • The iPad 2 is a completely new model, fully redesigned
  • Available in two colors: white and black
  • Available in wi-fi only, AT&T 3G or Verizon 3G
  • The iPad 2 is 33% thinner (8.8mm) than iPad 1 (13.4mm). It’s thinner than the iPhone 4
  • The iPad 2 is lighter (1.3 lbs) than the iPad 1 (1.5lbs)
  • It’s much faster, using a new dual-core proccessor chip called A5. 2x faster CPU and 9X faster graphics
  • Power and Battery:
    Wi-Fi version of Ipad 2: Built-in 25-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music, Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system
    3G version of iPad 2: Built-in 25-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music, up to 9 hours of surfing the web using 3G data network, Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system 
  • Front and rear cameras, can be used for FaceTime video chats or taking pictures:
    1) Back camera: Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still camera with 5x digital zoom
    2) Front camera: Video recording, VGA up to 30 frames per second with audio; VGA-quality still camera 
  • HDMI video output, providing 1080p via $39 special cable. You couldn’t do this before.
  • Now has gyro like iPhone & iPod Touch, very helpful for games
  • iPad 2 completely new case, much thinner, acts like a cover instead of a case, is held on by magnets, iPad automatically wakes up when you open the cover, coverfolds up to become a stand, comes in many colors. Polyurethane cases are $39, leather $69.
  • Comes with built in “PhotoBooth” software for doing fun things with pictures
  • New software for iPad available for purchase:
    1) iMovie for iPad, a movie editing studio, like iPhone version but bigger, better. Price of iMovie for iPad: $4.99
    2) GarageBand – turns iPad into a musical instrument: piano or synthesizer (choose from dozens of models), guitar, drum set, and 8-track recording studio. The guitar feature will help teach you to play the guitar, so you can’t hit a bad note and anyone can play. The piano software allows you to play with dynamics, the sound is different when you tap softly or with force. They use the accelerometer to achieve that effect. Price of GarageBand for iPad: $4.99

“This is worth repeating. It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology is not enough. It’s tech married with the liberal arts and the humanities. Nowhere is that more true than in the post-PC products. Our competitors are looking at this like it’s the next PC market. That is not the right approach to this. These are post-PC devices that need to be easier to use than a PC, more intuitive. The hardware and software need to intertwine more than they do on a PC. We think we’re on the right path with this.”
