Colorful mask decorating, noisy grogger creations, and yummy food, including Make-Your-Own Hamantashans (traditional holiday cookies)! Come in costume to get a free raffle ticket! Purim celebrates the story told in the biblical Book of Esther, in which the evil Haman plots to exterminate the Jewish people of ancient Persia, but is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai, who are Jewish. Celebrations include a carnival atmosphere, costumes, bringing gifts of food, and reading aloud the story of Purim from the Biblical book of Esther, also called "the Megillah." When the name of Haman is read, people stomp their feet, hiss, boo, or shake noisemakers ("groggers") to obliterate his name. |
