¡Viva el Arte de Santa Bárbara! presents La Cuneta Son Machin, the Grammy-nominated, trailblazing band of young musicians from Managua, Nicaragua, in free, family performances at Isla Vista School on Friday, February 9 at 7pm. Dubbed by LA Weekly as, “marimba-soaked hyper-cumbia,” La Cuneta Son Machin’s sound is rooted in Nicaraguan folklorico, a tradition of story-telling and deep national pride, led by marimba with classical guitar, and lyrical flutes.
La Cuneta Son Machin made an improvised start in August 2009, during Managua’s Santo Domingo Festival. As the parade passed by Carlos Mejía’s Managua home, the six musicians decided to head for the street, taking their instruments with them to play along, and a band was born. Mixing cumbias with jarring metal sounds, they gave the project a name: “la cuneta” for sidewalk, and “son machin” for sound machine, and quickly recorded their first album “El Zafarrancho.” A second album, “Amor Fritanguero,” integrated hip hop and folklorico, and several of the songs became anthems for Nicaraguan youth. Their third recording, Madongo, garnered a 2016 Grammy nomination - the first and only for Nicaragua to date.
Co-presented by the Marjorie Luke Theatre, the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center and UCSB Arts & Lectures, in partnership with the Isla Vista School After School Grant.
