Super good food, 7/9/2010
Reviewer: David

I eat here whenever I want a great latte and a meal that is pretty simple but such good quality. You can go simple and just have any bread toasted and it is just the best. Or if you like spicy food, like me, get the Huevoes Rancheros. Anything with their salsa in it just makes it even better but the flavors mixing in the huevoes....perfection! My son had the Tri tip omelette, we are both tri tip fans, and he thought the meat was marinated just right and liked the way the flavors mixed too. At times I will say the wait for the food can seem a little long but then you start eating and you are left happy and full.

delicious, quality, great staff whats better than that?, 5/27/2010

This place is fantastic! The eggs rose and the tuna sandwich are my favorite with out a doubt. Also the mandarin danish and poppy seed twist, they are to die for! The service is great, the girls there are so friendly and always willing to answer all my questions about their breads. You have to try the rudolph steiner...soooo good!! I have been there quite a few times now and they never let me down! If you get there early its calm and relaxing, if you go later in the day its definitely hoppin but i love to people watch so its perfect for me! Plus I think its a good sign that a place is busy...it means they really have something to offer! Check em out, they are open all week long.

I discovered the poached egg and it was bombastic, 5/3/2010

This really is a delicious breakfast place. The menu isn't overly fit with choices and it all complements what they aim to do - great bread. I haven't tried their sweeter options but the poached eggs, especially the Eggs Rose, are amazing.
Service wise, I'd suggest a better system for eat in guests, you pretty much have to stand in the way of the staff to wait for a table or someone else will pounce on it before you. Also a $30 bill for two (breakfast) isn't my ideal but i guess it hasn't stopped me yet, I just don't eat here as often as I wish.

Don't have the time to go back, 5/2/2010
Reviewer: Lee
from Santa Barbara, CA
I found this place one day taking my daughter to dance class and was blown away by the breakfast I had! Since then I tryed to go back expecting the same experience and was disapointed by the fact that the first time I tryed to call in an order (in a hurry while pulled over to the side of the road) I was put on hold then hung up on twice, when I finally talked to the girl she said my order will be ready in a half hour! (After I already had been on hold for 10min).
Deciding to give a second chance I called in another order (this time calling earlier, hoping to be less busy) when I picked it up and got to work it was missing half my order. The food is pretty good, but being a bussiness owner myself I know how important costumer service is, and I don't have the time to waste getting my breakfast any more.

Best Breakfast In SB, 2/25/2010
Reviewer: Alexander

The Eggs Rose is one of my favorite breakfast items I've ever had. Poached eggs on top of fresh baked Kalamata olive bread with an artichoke paste, delicious! The special omelet is also very good, I think it has mushrooms, spinach, onions, tomato, and fontina cheese.
The baked goods are the best in town (easily and undeniably).
The Tuscan Batta is a great choice for lunch time as well. The service can be slow because the place gets so busy sometimes, but as a regular I have always had prompt and diligent service here.

Somethings are worth waiting for..., 2/22/2010

I have to admit this place gets kinda crowded and is very small for the crowd it draws... but the food is always delicious! And the bread is out of this world good! I went there last weekend... and sat outside around the corner from the front of the bakery. There is a chill factor involved we were sitting in wind tunnel and service was a bit slow...mainly because we were sitting in a spot where we were out of sight out of mind... but none the less I enjoyed my breakfast 2 poached eggs and toast & a side of potato, loved my coffee with serveral refills and enjoyed the experience. Remember to buy a loaf a bread for home ! My favorite is the rosemary lemon! Bring a coat if your planning on sitting outside!

Go -- and with a generous spirit , 2/20/2010

D'Angelo is my favorite place to share a leisurely breakfast with friends. Order some lattes, fresh juice, pastries, poached eggs (with tapenade, yum) real, thick sourdough toast, lovely jams, fruit, and fabulous french toast -- and order bread to take home (they'll slice it for you if you ask). Enjoy the sunshine, the coffee, the ocean breeze and the smell of fresh baked bread. Talk and laugh, let the kids run around a bit. Don't fret if the service is slow, or your server is a little bratty. D'Angelo puts the food first and if you're patient, you'll be rewarded with a lovely morning and a fantastic meal.

Disappointment, 10/8/2009
Reviewer: Barbara
from Goleta, CA
Since I've moved here from Europe I was longing for the taste of a real wholegrain bread and finally ended up baking it by myself. But I was told about D'Angelo as another possible solution. After reading the reviews here I was expecting a miracle which, unfortunately, turned out to be a great disappointment. Most of the breads and rolls are still baked from wheat so they may be tasty, but are not healthy (as rye or graham breads are) and definitely not recommended if you're on a diet. What's more, they are fresh for a few hours and then need to be toasted. It's great that they add sourdough, but they have no idea about proportions which should be used what makes different kinds of bread and rolls tasting exactly the same. Finally, everything here is extremely overprized - for the price of a few rolls here you can actually buy 2 pounds of rye flour and just bake a much better bread by yourself.
Regarding the service, I can't say much, since I bought everything for take away, but the cashier was rather rude. Maybe I asked too many questions instead of praising this place as most people do.

WOW!!!!, 9/28/2009

We love this restaurant. The food is always incredible. The best bread we have ever had, there is nothing like it any where else in town. The service has always been excellent. Today was special and the secret is out because the Food Network was there filming to feature it on one of their shows. That should tell you everything.
If you want to go somewhere special for breakfast this is the place to go!

Best ever grilled ham and cheese sandwich, 9/26/2009
Reviewer: David Wallec

I usually make my own grilled sandwiches, since I can't a good one anywhere, but I have to say I was really surprised when I tried the Black Forest Ham and Gruyere Sandwich last week.
It was perfect. Fantastic service.

I've never eaten there, but the bread/pastries are superb, 9/17/2009
Reviewer: Jeffrey
from Santa Barbara, CA
It seems like most of the reviews here were written about the service and food for breakfast or lunch, so I thought I'd write about my experiences with just the bread and pastries you can purchase to go.
This is, without a doubt, the best BREAD store in Santa Barbara. They have lots and lots of variety (everything from crusty baguettes to sourdough rounds, multigrain loaves, and dinner rolls). The other bread stores I've been to in Santa Barbara have little to no bread variety (maybe some baguettes and a few rolls). In addition to the variety, D'Angelo will slice your loaf for you if you want them to. It's a nice touch since my girlfriend tends to turn bread loaves into pita bread when she slices it herself.
However, ss much as I like the bread it's the pastries that keep me consistently coming back, week after week. Their tri-berry scones are just fantastic - crumbly, not too cakey, and perfectly moist. The layer of berry puree in the middle of the scone provides just a bit of sweetness to counterbalance the rest of the savory scone.
The poppy seed twists are fantastic as well - the right amount of crisp combined with a flaky buttery texture.
None of the pastries are overly sweet (something a lot of places screw up) and none of them leave that greasy coating in your mouth that's a sure sign of low quality lard or Crisco.
Based on the reviews below there are probably lots of better places in Santa Barbara for breakfast, but I KNOW there is no place with better bread and/or pastries.

Fabulous as always, 9/12/2009

We came here in August with out-of-town friends. We don't come that often because it's way downtown, and can be hard to get a table. But parking was easy, tables were available, and I'd forgotten how good the food is! Well worth the price. We're going to make more of an effort to get her in FY2010.

The Perfect Breakfast
Reviewer: Millerama
from Santa Barbara, CA
The bread and the breakfast are just perfect. I've eaten at just about every breakfast joint in this town, from the Red Lion and Sambo's to Jeannine's and the Biltmore, and me and my stomach say d'Angelo consistently prepares the absolute perfect breakfast and makes the best latte in town. Quality is above excellent, quantity is just right for me, price makes it a rare treat. The servers work hard and things don't always go perfectly, but I've always found them to be good tempered and cheery. But d'Angelo's prepares a breakfast as well as my husband does, and that is saying A LOT.

Just don't order the "buckwheat" waffle
Reviewer: Nora
from Santa Barbara, CA
Seriously, the waffle is a joke. I would love to know what percentage of the flour is actually buckwheat: 2%? The frozen waffles I occasionally eat are better and more substantial. In fact, nearly every frozen waffle on sale at Lazy Acres is going to be better than this ridiculous thing. Is it on the menu for children used to Eggos?

Very good bread and pastry

Hallo, i`m an Italian chef and i spend the cristmas time in california and i found this fantasic bakery, i couldn't belive it. The best about this place is the siplicity used to build the site, i mean you can see the ovens and all the equipment used to prepaire all the products. The food for my point of view was excellent, the service wasn't so brilliant but in this kind of places should be like that.well done guys, keep going.

What a pleasure. Good coffee and a nice place to relax.
Reviewer: S
from Santa Barbara, CA
I love going to D'Angelo's for a morning when I have a book to read and time to relax. I can't imagine going to this cafe when you need to rush somewhere else -- there are plenty of other restaurants for that. This is a *cafe* where you can enjoy your coffee and the sunshine and the nice servers. It's a pleasure to be there.

I wouldn't bother, there's 100 places better in SB
Reviewer: Morgan
from Santa Barbara, CA
I go here only about once every 2 or 3 years, which is just enough time for me to forget how bad my previous experience was here or maybe I just hope they've made drastic changes since my last visit. The food has always been overpriced- not in regards to quality, or even the Santa Barbara standard of living, but for what you actually get on your plate. $12 for two slices of toast with spread and a pair of eggs? What made me write this review was seeing that I'm not the only one wondering why the service there is never any good. Someone else put that "the servers here are very poorly trained. They waver between indifference and outright rudeness to customers." I couldn't agree more. When I went this morning we didn't have a server, just an order-taker, and we felt as though our waitress was a little perterbed with us putting her out by being there. Several wrong things were brought to our table multiple times, making us wonder if the expediters walk through the restaurant asking each table if this was their dish. All this and at the end the server thought it fit to add an 18% gratuity to our party of six when one of our people had nothing more than a measly glass of $5 orange juice and another only had a $5 wheat toast (which was delayed and perhaps forgotten). I am usually very forgiving of restaurant mistakes (I manage one myself), but the servers very poor service followed by her generously auto gratting a table that she probably shouldn't have made us all swear that was the last time we would make the mistake of dining here.
