Best Thai for past 15 years, 7/29/2010
Reviewer: Paul from Santa Barbara, CA
Your Choice has much better food and service than the "other" place that wins the ballot stuffing awards. While some other restaurants have been cutting corners, the quality of ingredients here is consistently good and even my Asian friends like it best. For the past 15 years, whenever I try another Thai place in town, I am disappointed. Also, when I ask to modify an order, they offer a solution instead of saying- "no, can't du eet." The traffic on State Street is a negative. The person at the bottom end of these ratings probably prefers McDonald's.

I'm a regular! I <3 this place!, 10/28/2009

Whenever I feel sick, or even just hungover... I come here and get this soup Tom Yum Kai its spicy lemongrass chicken soup that works wonders and makes you feel AWESOME! Everything else on the menu is delicious but I absolutly always get this soup! THe service is friendly and fast, for take out or dining in. I a BIG fan of this restaurant and would recommend it anyone who wants good THAI FOOD!

The Best Thai in SB

Definitely our favorite Thai Restaurant in SB.. Dishes are imaginative, different and DELICIOUS. Great friendly service.

6 1/2 on a scale of 1-10

I got the Coconut chicken soup which was actaully very good. Great portion too. I've had this many places and it is usually too rich but this was tart also with some kick. The Thai shrimp salad was weak! The salad had wilted greens and limp mint. The upside was the shrimp were plentiful. Typical Thai, some dishes shine, some suck.

Below Average

I ordered the red curry with tofu for $9.95 (for dinner). They have the gall to charge an additional $1.50 for steamed rice. The total for just this entree with an order of steamed rice, tax and 15% gratuity is $14.36. The curry sauce was flat, the paucity of lime juice, coconut milk, coriander, and fresh cilantro/basil were apparent. There were a few narrow slices of bell pepper and a heaping of sliced bamboos shoots; the plate was very "lite" on vegetables. The food I had was mediocre, and the meal was overpriced. I prefer the service and the food at Bangkok palace, to name another Thai restaurant in the area.

Ok food/service

The pad thai was not as good as Pattaya or Meun Fan. I prefer bean sprouts and peanuts in a pad thai and you need fresher ingredients and more meat. But it was Ok just not great esp for the price. Inside is nice though you can get a greenhouse effect on a hot day in the front(though good for cold days). Plenty of places to sit there. Maybe Pad thai is not their specialty but I would not vote this place too highly for Thai food. Fairly nice servers. I have not tried Your Place to compare yet but I would agree on the better neighborhood comments.

This really is my choice!

I love Thai food and used to go there 10-15 years ago, but I have not visited this restaurant for several years because of the traffic congestion on Upper State. Yesterday some friends took me there for lunch, and I had a great meal for a reasonable price. My chicken spinach soup was excellent- as if I had made it myself. My seafood special was fantastic and they made it to my level of spice with brown rice. It was nicely presented and served and the service was very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. At the end we had the coconut ice cream which was reaaally good. I usually reserve 5 stars for 5 star restaurants, but they made me feel like it was that.

Very Good

This pleasant place has some really delicious specials. Popeye chicken and pumpkin curry are my favorites and I order them whenever I come here which is unusual for me as I usually try different dishes on return trips to restaurants. Find the dishes YOU really like here and the ones you really like at the "other" Choice Thai place in town. The two places do have different specialities.

OK food, great service

After a disappointing meal at Your Place (a similarly named Thai food restaurant in Santa Barbara), we decided to try out Your Choice. Right off the bat, Your Choice scores points for being on State Street and not in the ghetto, like Your Place. The service at Your Choice is some of the best I've ever experienced at a thai food restaurant. The waiters were very friendly and accomodating. Our drinks were never empty. The manager even thanked us for coming as we left. ---- The food was just OK. The pad thai was better than Your Place, but not by a lot. It didn't have the citrusy flavor that I don't like, but it was kind of bland. It definitely needed some more spice. It was just as expensive as Your Place... $11.95 I believe. The portion sizes were pretty disappointing... ------ I'm still looking for a great thai restaurant in SB.... I really hope I find one. I won't be returning to Your Choice because of the high price and small portion sizes.

Food Very Good and service with a smile But .......

I usually order "To Go" but I found that my last trip was a bit of a disapointment as the quantity Vs. price paid did not line up. The portion was small and a regular dinner order left me a little hungry. I should have ordered 2 complete dinners !! Other Thai Restaurants have a larger portion that not only "fills up" a grown man but even leaves a little to heat up later. I do like the food here and the friendly staff but I wish they would "Super-Size" their food even a little bit and make it a better value. the last meal I purchased there cost me a the same as 1 hour of work at my job so it is special to take this fine meal home. I will eat there again but I have begun to try other Thai restaurants in the immediate area with good results!! I dont mean to attack the owner but to help him to better an already fine eating establishment. Sincerely John S. Reynolds

Good Food as always

I have been to YCT quite a few times. Spicy fried rice is my favorite. Food has generally be good over the years. I love the ginger tea and the jasmine tea. My only complaint is the serving size. I feel it is too big.

Oh, how I miss this place!

When I lived in Santa Barbara, I made it a point to come out here at least every other week. The food is excellent- MUCH better than Your Place, which I guess is easy to confuse with Your Choice. Anyway, my favorite dish is the garlic pepper tofu. In fact, any tofu entree they have is fantastic. The servers are very nice and friendly as well. I am half considering making a trip back to Santa Barbara just so I can have that tofu again... yum!
