Delicious Little Find., 8/22/2010
Reviewer: Amanda from Santa Barbara, CA
I too was tired of waiting an hour in the La Super Rica line during tourist season so my fiancee and I decided to head over to Rose Cafe after somebody had mentioned it to me. We've been back a couple of times since. They have great salsa, tacos, quesadillas and the people who work there are so sweet. Next time we have visitors in town this is where we will take them.

yummy chili colorado and salsa, 6/20/2010

On our visits to Santa Barbara we usually stop in at La Superica but wanted to try something different. Growing up among world class Tucson AZ mexican eateries we are very picky. But, we found a very pleasant surprise: The Rose Cafe on Haley -- an old fashioned family run place, that I remember being common 50 years ago. The home style menu, the salsa with fresh chopped garden herbs on top, and the fantastic Chili Colorado burritos can't be beat. A chicken taco was also very good. Go there early before they run out of the daily specials: Chicken Ranchero and home made soups.

Good stuff!!, 10/28/2009

I'll admit, this wasn't our first choice but I'm glad we went. We've been here many times, but not for a while and we were pleasantly surprised. The "other" place (Los Agaves) was so packed and noisy we turned back and decided on Rose Cafe. There were a few other tables occupied and a couple of folks at the bar. It was so nice not to have to be crunched in with a crowd of noisy diners. Very good food and they were more than happy to substitute items at a VERY nominal charge. Fifty cents for meat in your enchilada versus up to $3.00 at other places. The server was very polite and came by several times to ensure that all was well. Nothing fancy here...just good food and excellent service. I'll be back here more often to enjoy the sublime and unique setting that is Rose Cafe on Haley.

Not impressed this time around
Reviewer: Samantha from Santa Barbara, CA
I placed a fairly large order for pick up the other day. I normally go to the Rose Cafe on the Mesa, which never disappoints. Two of my items were missing and when I asked for them, I was given smaller portions than what I ordered. I ordered 2 bags of chips and was given one small bag with chips that were stale. I ordered 2 large orders of guacamole and was given 2 very small containers. I don't think this is normal for this restaurant but I don't think I'll visit the Haley Rose again any time soon.

A Downtown Rose Cafe Devotee!
Reviewer: John Thyne from Santa Barbara, CA
I loved the Independent's article about the fans of Rose Cafe downtown versus Rose Cafe at the Mesa. I am unabashedly a Downtown Rose Cafe devotee. Try as I might, I cannot help but to order the Cheese Enchiladas with rice + beans every time! These are undoubtedly the best enchiladas I've ever had in a restaurant! Hoping to experience more of the menu, I typically add an a la carte item and have been most impressed by the beef and chicken tacos and the chile colorado burito (meat in a tortilla, not a big overstuffed concoction). Rice + beans are authentic and a must on every visit! Great service and unbeatable salsa!

Best mexican food ever!
Reviewer: Julia brown from Santa Barbara, CA
The Rose downtown is the best! mesa is a little whitewashed and fancier, the salsa is as spicy and although they do have different beans which are great the original Rose is the best!..You can't beat their mole or special taco enchilada combo. I crave their salsa with jalapeno chunks and can't get enough. My absolute favorite mexican restaurant ever! It seems like a lot of yuppies like the mesa one better because it is nicer, but the service and family atmosphere makes up for it. If i one the lotto I would buy it so it would never close down and to make sure they keep doing what they have been doing for most of my life. They make me a happy woman!

Disapointed
Reviewer: Jos from santa barbara, ca
I have heard nothing but good things about Rose's cafe, and finally managed to get over there tonight for dinner. I was so disappointed that I came home immediately to check the reviews. Maybe I went on a bad night, or the chef was ill, or something, but my food was so bad as to be inedible. I've grown up in southern california and had a lot of Mexican food, and this restaurant is way down near the bottom of the list. I had the steak ranchero, and not only did it look like dog food, but the taste was bland bordering on actually bad tasting. I did not finish my meal, and my dining partner said his chicken enchiladas were not good either.

My new taco stop!
Reviewer: Marie from Santa Barbara, CA
First visit to the Rose cafe and it just hit the spot. I now have a new taco stop! Atmosphere was very relaxed and the waitress was very pleasant. Only thing I would change is making the chip bowls bigger.

One of the great restaurant in Santa Barbara
Reviewer: Yoshi from Goleta
I been going to Rose for over 20 years. Many things has changed in the area but not Rose Cafe. You just can not beat the price and quality of the food. I like the fact retro looks and location drive off many of hip new commers in this area. This place reminds me of good old Santa Barbara.

The only place in town.
Reviewer: Finn Nielsen from Helsinki Finland
I have not lived in the USA since 1973 but whenever I visit Santa Barbara I ALWAYS go to Rose Cafe. The food, service and atmosphere is totally genuine. Nothing has changed since my first time in 1962. A truly fantastic place. At the top of my list whenever I visit California.

Bland, generic food with 1940's diner atmosphere
Reviewer: Mike from Santa Barbara
I thought I had gone back in time. All that's missing is the old jukebox blaring Mexican ranchera music. Clean and really a great old spot. But the food is another story all together. Odd chemical taste to the enchilada. Chicken looked more like cat food. Cold rice, lukewarm beans, good chile rellano. Waitress was nice and service was good but I'll think twice about coming back.

Like being at Grandma's house!!
Reviewer: Yoli from Santa Barbara
Well all i have to say is that this food is so authentic! I went on a sunday afternoon and got the enchiladas!! Mmmm mmm!! Yummy! I am hispanic and know a good home cooked meal and that is exactly what i got!! It was just like going to my Grandma's house back home! The atmosphere is so nice and cozy! If you know authentic Mexican food you will love the Rose Cafe! It's REAL!
