best chicken-fried steak in the county, 7/30/2009
Reviewer: Dan Montello

Many excellent breakfast and lunch dishes, with a real locals feel. It serves the tastiest and lightest chicken-fried steak with sausage gravy in town, probably in the county. I have tried almost 10 others in town, and Steve's wins hands down. Try it and tell me I'm wrong..

steve's is the kind of place you didn't think could be real.
it's like going to the town in the andy griffith show....
steve is usually there, and he's a friendly, unpretentious guy.
his staff is the same, they work hard because they seem to really care. the food is great. the view is great. no rush. i guess this all rubs off on the customers because strangers just end up talking to each other. i usually leave pretty happy. life is good. ...i wish more things were as straightforward and beautiful as steve's. you should go.

Stay open later!!!

We have been meaning to try this place, but had no idea it was mostly breakfast. Showed up at 1:00p.m. on a Sunday and found out on Sunday, they only serve breakfast (and they closed at 1:00). But they offered to make me a sanwich, and it was really good. The people with me really liked their breakfasts too. The waitpersons were super sweet and fun. I know "Steve" probably wants a life, but we don't want him to have one, we want him to stay open later so we can eat there more often....

Great food/service

I have eaten here at least a half dozen times for breakfast. The surroundings are simple and dare I say unimpressive. The food however is very good. I would not ordinarily order a pork chop for breakfast, but was encouraged by the waitress the other day. Wow, that was excellent, thick and juicy, nicely seasoned and served with scrambled eggs, a bowl of fruit (strawberries and watermelon) and a toasted english muffin. Top it off with a latte and we're talking some good eats! I have never found it crowded and the quality of the food and service is much better than any of its competition (cajun kitchen for example).

We were Surprised

Read the reviews(sometimes we have found "other place" restaurants to be given over-exuberant comments...but this place is very right-on. Met the owner Steve, and he is a neat fellow who REALLY cares and DELIVERS on yummy food. The whole place is simple...but how do you say it..."shows attention to detail"- The double cappuchino's tasted RICH, concentrated,
and of high quality coffee. WARM Real maple syrup(so what if it's a buck more...this stuff is expensive...please don't be cheap and think the world should pay your mortgage for a $3.95 waffle--don't you want him to make enough to stay in business to deliver quality food?)(waffle was quite French-quality thin and properly slightly crunchy)-Tasty non-greasy large sized bacon that was really almost all meat and no fat....eggs were of the tasty free-range taste..cooked right(not over-done...whew..)(oh by the way..we got a side of the corned beef hash(good deal for $2.50..and liked its style...it isn't the $12 kind that you get at exotic restaurants with shredded meat etc...but its pure, delicious...and uses very small diced potatoes that are NOT overdone or mush like other places.)Haven't tried lunch yet...but sure will now.
I feel guilty about letting this place out of the bag.
Hope this doesn't bring too many people in..but this guide is how we learned about it in the first place.--JUST DON'T TELL TOO MANY OTHERS...FAIR ENOUGH?..if it gets out of hand...it will be depressing.-

THE breakfast place on/near Upper State
Reviewer: Mike
from Santa Barbara
This is an excellent breakfast place and a great value to boot. Try one of the specials or one of the combos listed at the bottom of the menu. I think the breakfast food quality and value for your buck beats Farmer Boy, Max's, or the Treehouse nearby on Upper State.
